Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference: Day One

LONG BEACH, California, February 19. THE Tritons swimming and diving teams got off to an amazing start on Wednesday at the PCSC Championships, with three school records in the four relay events and three new UCSD athletes qualifying for the NCAA National Championships. The women's 200 medley relay team posted the best finish of the day, winning their event with a school record time, while the men's 200 medley and women's 800 free also set new UCSD standards. Diver Kevin Sullivan joined the ranks of Tritons heading to Nationals in Houston with his performance on the one-meter board.

"We might have swim even a little better than I expected," said head coach Scott McGihon. "Three of our four swims were school records, but I was even more happy about was that we were swimming smart."

After the first day of competition, the UCSD men's team leads all competitors with a total score of 190 points, while the women's squad trails only Pepperdine with 145 total points.

Shea Kopp, Sadie O'Brien, Jessica Ferguson, and Aubrey Panis got UCSD of to a strong start, winning the 200 medley relay in a UCSD record 1:45.29. The men's 200 medley relay of Steven hardy, Pablo Carrillo, Dan Perdew, and Todd Langland responded with their Triton record finish of 1:31.37, good for second overall.

Both the women's and men's 800 free also finished as runners-up on the day. The team of Alexandra Henley, Panis, Erinn Deters, and Ashtyn Douglas posted another school record with their finishing time of 7:27.60. The men, represented by Brandon Maryatt, Langland, Michael Lorch, and Kneif Lohse, finished with a time of 6:45.76. Lorch and Lohse also picked up their first NCAA qualifying times as part of the team.

On the diving boards, Danielle Niculescu finished fifth in the women's three-meter with a score of 358.10. Sullivan secured a 442.80 point total for a third-place finish, and was followed by teammates Patrick Cohen in fourth and Bryan McGrory in fifth, posting scores of 424.45 and 368.30, respectively.

"We put ourselves in position to accomplish our goals for the meet, to win both team championships," said Coach McGihon, as the Tritons look to recapture the conference championships each team held in 2007.

UCSD will look to continue their solid efforts as the PCSC Championships continue tomorrow through Saturday in Long Beach.
