ATLANTA, Georgia, February 15. WILL Freeman, a junior at Greater Atlanta Christian, shot down the national independent high school record in the 500-yard freestyle at the Georgia State 1-4A Championships yesterday.
Freeman checked in with a swift time of 4:19.32. That performance wiped out the 4:19.54 set by Fran Crippen of Germantown Academy back in 2002. The oldest high school record on the books still stands as the overall standard as Jeff Kostoff of Upland High in Calif., charted a 4:16.39 in the 500-yard free on May 14, 1983.

February 16, 2009 And I think when Kostoff set that record, he broke the current American record in doing so. Like maybe Goodell's 500 free record? And maybe only Spitz os the only other prepster to break an American record at a high school meet. But I could wrong with that info Submitted by: Park528
February 23, 2009 yeah it could be awhile before someone sets a national record at a high school meet. i think that the entire swimming nation would lose bodily function if he posted a 4:15 or a 4:14 next year, BUT
i just think its out of the picture for a high schooler to get into the realm of peter vanderkaay's 4:08.
national record at a high school meet? let me know when we get close. Submitted by: lightbulb12
February 25, 2009 i think john kinsella of hinsdale h.s.may have held the am. record in the 500 free in high school, although he may have set the record at nationals. seems like he went about 4:27, when the ncaa record was about 4:33. this would have been about 1969 or '70.
