Arizona State vs. Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona, February 12. IN head coach Frank Busch's final home meet at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, the Arizona swimming and diving teams swept in-state rival Arizona State to close its dual meet season. The men won 166-126, while the women topped the Sun Devils, 177-123.

Alyssa Anderson continued her fabulous dual meet swimming, winning the women's 200 butterfly, 500 freestyle and 200 I.M. as she was never really challenged in any of the three wins.

Margo Geer also had an excellent day for the Wildcats as she won the women's 50 and 100 freestyle races and placed runner-up in the 200 free. Geer's time of 22.75 in the 50 was impressive for the time in the season.

In the 200 medley relay to begin the day's events, Sarah Denninghoff, Ellyn Baumgardner and Dana Christ teamed with Geer to win the race in 1:40.91.

On the diving boards, Ainsley Oliver sealed two big wins for the Wildcats, winning the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events with scores of 293.55 and 310.20, respectively.

Others posting wins on the women's side for UA included Lindsay Seemann in the 200 back (1:59.83) and Aubrey Peacock in the 100 back (55.43).

For the Arizona men, they proved to be just as dominant winning a total of the 11 of 12 swimming events which were not exhibitioned.

Kelley Wyman was a multiple winner, taking the men's 50 and 100 freestyle in 20.22 and 44.79, respectively.

Kevin Steel won his first event as a Wildcat, claiming the men's 100 breaststroke in 55.23.

In the men's 200 medley relay, Arizona's team of Nick Hadinger, Steel, A.J. Tipton and Nick Popov took first place with a time of 1:28.86.

Junior A.J. Tipton also claimed two wins for Arizona as the Tennessee native won the men's 200 free and 500 free titles in 1:39.43 and 4:27.87, respectively.

Others posting wins on the men's side were: Mitchell Friedemann in the 100 back (48.93), Matt Barber in the 200 fly (1:51.45), Michael Sheppard in the 200 backstroke (1:46.86), Austen Thompson in the 200 breaststroke (2:02.07) and Craig Jordens in the 100 butterfly (49.19.)

Exhibitioning the final relay of the day, the Arizona foursome of Hadinger, Friedemann, Tommy Gutman and Rob Iddiols touched first with a time of 2:59.24.

Up next, the teams will prepare for the Pac-10 Championships. The women's meet, held in Federal Way, Wash., will run from Feb. 23-26. The men's meet, in Long Beach, Calif., will begin March 2nd and run through the 5th.
