Air Force vs. Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyoming, November 11. ON men's senior night in Corbett Poll, the Wyoming Cowboy and Cowgirls swimming and diving teams defeated the Air Force Falcons. The Cowgirls beat the Falcons 171.5-122.5, while the Cowboys downed AFA for the fifth consecutive time 190.5-109.5. The victory brings the Cowgirls overall dual record to 3-2 and 2-1 in the Mountain West. The Cowboy win moves their overall dual record to 1-2. Cowboy seniors Marshall Dilworth, Brandon Fischer and Valentin Schwarz were honored prior to tonight's meet.
"We talked about at the beginning of the meet that we had not lost to Air Force in four years and we wanted to continue that streak," Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson said. "It is really is a shame for us to have our senior night so early this season. The men knew it was important to win that helmet back tonight and they needed a ‘W'. I was really proud of our guys today they swam really, really well. The women also had a great meet today. Air Force's women have improved, but we were able swim some kids in off events and get the win."

Starting the meet off was the 200-yard medley relay. The Cowgirl ‘A' Relay team of Kelsey Conci, Morgan Hartigan, Claudia Carlson and Nikki Finnesand touched the wall first three full seconds ahead of their nearest competitors with a time of 1:45.49. The Cowgirl ‘B' realy squad of Jordan Denny, Lauren Hewson, Jessy Badaracco and Makenzie Hewson touched the wall in second with a time of 1:48.63.

The Cowboys also picked up a win in the 200 medley relay. Cowboys Marshall Dilworth, Brandon Fischer, Nick Rutecki and Jeff Frey took first with a time of 1:31.78.

In the 1000 freestyle, Cowgirls Kasey Robinson (10:51.11), Paige Fischer (10:53.84) and Aliyah Mikulski (11:04.74) finished one, two, three respectively. In the men's 1000 free, Jayce Calhoon finished the highest for the Cowboys taking second with a time of 9:55.44.

The women's 200 free finished with Cowgirl Denny taking second place with a time of 1:57.43. Cowboys Ethan Griffel and Ryan O'Leary touched the wall in first and second, respectively. Griffel swam a 1:43.59 200 free, while O'Leary swam a 1:43.67.

Senior Conci took first place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.87. Fellow senior Caroline Wells took second in the 100 back with a time of 59.55. In the men's 100 back, Dilworth took first place with a time of 51.76.

The next event was the 100 breaststroke and both the Cowboys and the Cowgirls grabbed wins. On the women's side Lauren Hewson, Stephanie Young and Meghan Swirzcki finished first, second and third with times of 1:05.21, 1:08.47 and 1:08.60, respectively. In the men's 100 breast, Cowboy Fischer touched the wall first with a time of 55.49.

"Lauren and Stephanie had really nice 100 breaststroke swims tonight," Johnson said.

In the 200 butterfly, Wyoming again swept both the men's and women's events. On the women's side Cowgirls Badaracco (2:10.65) and Karen Hendrick (2:13.64) took first and second. Cowboys Trevor LeValley (1:55.06) and Jordan Turner (1:56.81) also took first and second in the 200 fly.

"Trevor had a great performance today," Johnson added. "He was as far back as third and he battled back a touched those guys out for the win."

In the 50 freestyle, Cowgirl Hartigan took first place with a time of 23.85. On the men's side, Cowboys Frey (20.93), John Dowd (21.46) and Rutecki (21.69) finished one, two and three.

"Morgan's 50 free was just awesome tonight," Johnson added.

Wyoming picked up two more wins in the men's and women's 100 free. For the Cowgirls Jehan Atoe touched the wall first with a time of 54.04. Cowboys Frey and O'Leary went one, two in the 100 free with times of 46.44 and 46.98, respectively.

In the women's 200 backstroke, freshman Denny took first with a time of 2:06.70. On the men's side Calhoon took first with a time of 1:55.09.

Senior Fischer continued his excellent night grabbing his second win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:01.79. Fischer's swim tied the Corbett Pool record held by former Cowboy and Olympian Scott Usher.

"Brandon nearly breaking Scott's record in the 200 breast was unbelievable," Johnson said.

Badaracco took home first for the Cowgirls in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:14.96, which was four-full seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. On the men's side LeValley took second place with a time of 4:48.92.

Conci picked up her second win of the night in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.16. Rutecki finished second in the 100 fly for the Pokes with a time of 51.57.

Cowgirl Hartigan took first in the 200 IM touching the wall four seconds ahead of her nearest competitor with a time of 2:06.20. Fischer won his third event of the night in the men's 200 IM with a time of 1:56.19. LeValley and Calhoon took second and third in the 200 IM with times of 2:00.08 and 2:01.13, respectively.

The Cowgirls and Cowboys finished the victories off by both winning the 400 freestyle relay. The Cowgirls ‘A' squad of Denny, Finnesand, Makenzie Hewson and Conci took first with a time of 3:34.96. The Cowboys ‘A' relay team of Frey, O'Leary, Rutecki and Griffel also took first with a time of 3:06.12.

On the day six UW swimmers won multiple events. Fischer picked up the most wins for UW with three. Cowboys Frey and Campbell won two events. Conci, Hartigan and Badaracco each won two events for the Cowgirls.

"Brandon was on fire today winning three events," Johnson said. "Jeff Frey was just a man today. He is really coming into himself in his sophomore year. Kelsey had some great swims today. Matt (Leach) is really trying to get her as fast as she can go in the 100 back to see if we can't get her an (NCAA) ‘A' cut next weekend."

In today's diving rounds, Cowboy Derek Campbell swept both the 1-and 3-meter boards, while Cowgirl Amanda Fay took first on the 1-meter. Campbell won the 1-meter with a final mark of 277.20. Senior Schwarz finished just behind Campbell on the 1-meter with a score of 270.38. Campbell also won the 3-meter for the Pokes finishing with a score of 272.93. Schwarz took third on the 3-meter with a final mark of 248.25. For the Cowgirls, Fay took first on the 1-meter with a final score of 258.83. Carolyn Wallace was the highest finisher for the Cowgirls on the 3-meter finishing second with a score of 222.15. Fay finished the 3-meter in third with a score of 216.38.

"Amanda has had some back issues this week for her to go out and put the list together like she did is amazing," UW diving coach Pat Bukowski said. "Derek did really well for us today, he just missed one dive that could have got him a (NCAA) ‘Zone' score. We are excited to get down to Arizona next week and dive against some really good competition."

Next up for Wyoming swimming will be its second trip to Texas this season, this time UW will swim at the Houston Invitational Nov. 17-19. Wyoming diving will travel to the Arizona Diving Invite in Tucson, Ariz., also on Nov. 17-19.
