Washington State Wins Patriot Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va., Dec. 3. THE Washington State University women’s swim team continued its strong performance, by winning the Patriot Invitational at George Mason University Sunday. The Cougars concluded the three-day event in impressive style, winning by a margin of 265 points.

Cougar swimmers recorded 10 wins and five second-place finishes out of 17 total events in the meet, for a final score of 916 points. Ohio University placed
second with 651, Boston College finished third with 322, and the host school, George Mason, placed sixth in the 13-team field.

Taryn Ternent, a freshman from Edenvale, South Africa, led the Cougars by recording three individual wins and four relay wins in the competition. Ternent won the 100 freestyle in a time of 51.85 seconds, and led the 400 freestyle relay team to victory Sunday. Earlier in the meet, she won the 100 backstroke, 50 freestyle, and swam on the winning 200 medley, 400 medley and
200 freestyle relay teams. In addition, Ternent’s times moved her name higher on WSU’s all-time lists for each individual event: 50 freestyle-second, 100
freestyle-second, 100 backstroke-third.

Cougar freshman Andree-Anne LeRoy (Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada) recorded the fastest time of the day in the 200 backstroke, 2:02.75, while swimming in a
consolation heat. Ohio’s Emily Bresser won the event with a time of 2:02.92. WSU freshmen Katie Byrnes (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) took second and Sasha Taylor (Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada) eighth. LeRoy had already set a WSU school record by winning the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:05.06 Friday.

In the 1,650 freestyle, sophomore Jill Olson (Seattle, Wash.) swam away with a victory in a time of 17:11.06. Also swimming well for the Cougars, sophomore Becca Cohen (Portland, Ore.) placed seventh and freshman Semah Zavareh (Houston, Texas) took ninth.

WSU concluded the competition with a win in the 400 freestyle relay by a team made up of Ternent, Cohen, LeRoy, and sophomore Lindsay Henahan (Rochester,
N.Y.). The Cougars’ “B” team of Byrnes, sophomore Rachelle Carano (Reno, Nev.), freshman Theresa Dunn (Morgan Hills, Calif.), and sophomore Sara Schmied
(Woodinville, Wash.) placed fifth in the same event.

"During this competition, we learned a lot about who we are as a team and what we can accomplish," WSU head coach Rocco Aceto said. "We have reached the half-way point in the season, and are beginning to realize how we can reach our lofty goals."
