Texas, UCLA Win Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 3. THE No.1 University of Texas men's swimming and diving team cruised to a first-place finish at the Texas Invitational posting a total of 751 points, held on Sunday, Dec. 3 at the Jamail Swim Center. Trailing the Longhorns were No. 7 California (563), No. 5 Arizona (554), No. 25
Wisconsin (493), No. 22 Harvard (398), No. 9 Michigan (321), No. 19 SMU (250), No. 12 Arizona State (210), TCU (149), Nebraska (131), No. 3 Stanford (89) and Kansas (39).

In the women's competition, No. 2 ranked UCLA scored 553.50 points to narrowly defeat No. 3 Stanford (529.50) and Texas (501.50). No. 3 Arizona was fourth (495.50), followed by No. 12 Wisconsin (398.50), No. 5 California (367), No. 13 Michigan (362), No. 15 SMU (290), Rice (152), No. 18 Minnesota (130), No. 16 Arizona State (128.50), TCU (71), Nebraska (47) and Harvard (2).

The Longhorn men not only won Saturday's 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays, but also captured Sunday's 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of senior Nate Dusing (Villa Hills, Ky.), freshman Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine), junior Tommy Hannan (Baltimore, Md.) and senior Jamie Rauch (Houston, Texas) set a Texas Invitational record with time of 2:55.34,
breaking the old mark of 2:55.90.

Texas freshman Brendan Hansen (Havertown, Pa.) captured his first individual title of the meet in the 200 breaststroke and also set a new invitational
record with a time of 1:58.33, just out-touching Michigan's Scott Werner (1:58.35). The old mark of 1:58.50 was set by Cal's Nuk Sirisanont in 1996. Other strong contributions for Texas came from Dusing, who posted second-place honors in the 200 backstroke (1:45.43) and Hannan, who placed fourth in the 200 fly with a time of 1:47.11.

"This is a turning point for us," said men's head coach Eddie Reese. "It was a strong competition for us and gave the team a great test before the NCAA's. We definitely came away with some solid performances and this will really help in our training for the next couple of months."

Arizona's Tyler Painter followed up his win yesterday in the 400 IM with a very quick 1650. His 14:52.18 was more than 10 seconds faster than Harvard's John Cole (15:02.42).

Harvard's Michael Im beat a very strong field to the wall in the 200 back, posting a 1:44.43.

Cal's Anthony Ervin, a double gold medalist aat the Sydney Olympics, touched first in the 100 free in 44.24, as only 9-hundredths separated the top four finishers. Arizona's Roland Schoeman, a South African Olympian, finished one-hundredth of a second behind Ervin.

Arizona went one-two in the 200 fly with Jeff Dash (1:45.29) edging teammate Ben Anderson (1:46.15).

In women's action, senior Colleen Lanné (Tucson, Ariz.) posted another great meet for the Longhorns capturing the 100 freestyle in a meet record and NCAA automatic time of 48.50. Lanné, along with sophomore Tanica Jamison (Dublin, Calif.), junior Lauren Martin (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Erin Phenix
(Cincinnati, Ohio) also won the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:18.30.

"I am extremely pleased with the whole team's performance," said co-head women's coach Jill Sterkel. "We posted unbelievable times, and I feel this
puts us in a great position for the NCAA Championships."

Stanford's Jessica Foschi won the 1650 free in 16:28.63, while defending NCAA chsaampion, Beth Botsford of Arizona, threw down a 1:54.77 to take the 200 back–four seconds ahead of the next three finishers.

Stanford frosh Tara Kirk completed her breaststroke double, taking the 200 in a very swift 2:12.24. In the 200 fly, Cal's fabulous freshman, Natalie Coughlin, edged Olympic champion, Misty Hyman, Stanford, 1:55.93 to 1:56.33. Hyman is just getting back into training after a post Olympics break.

Wisconsin's Sean Burnett won the men's platform diving while Stanford's McKenze Murphy took the women's event.
