Meet of the Week, Recap: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps vs. Redlands

REDLANDS, California, January 31. NOTHING could have gone more perfect for the Stags and the Athenas in Redlands, Calif., on Saturday as both the men and the women defeated the University of Redlands at the Thompson Aquatic Center.

With the win, both Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges teams finished out the season undefeated and did so in a fashion that produced a handful of NCAA qualifying marks and Thompson Aquatic Center records.

The Stags snapped the Bulldogs' unbeaten streak of dual meets in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), which dates back to 2000. The last time the Redlands men lost a dual meet was on Jan. 29, 2000 when Claremont-Mudd-Scripps defeated the Bulldogs 164-114.

Women's 200 Breaststroke
There was little doubt before the start of the women's 200 breaststroke that Perizzolo, a 2008 All-American in the event, would win. Perizzolo eliminated any shred of uncertainty about the race's outcome at the 100 mark when she turned at 1:09.12. Staying strong the rest of the way, she finished the race in 2:23.29, which earned her an NCAA "B" qualifying time and a pool record. Men's 400 Freestyle Relay
With the meet already in hand, the Stags could have called off the dogs on the final event of the meet. Instead, they pitted a formidable relay against Redlands' grouping of heralded sprinters and provided a memorable race. Harp led off the relay with a 47.55 time, which gave the Bulldogs a lead of just less than a second over the Stags. Olds dove in and cranked out a 47.55 split, which bested McNerney's 48.36 and gave Redlands a 1.5-second advantage heading into the third leg. Kristensen gained ground on Redlands' Steven Zarian as Kristensen clocked a 46.89 to Zarian's 48.76. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps held the advantage heading into the last leg as Terzic and Sloat went head-to-head for sprinting bragging rights. Terzic gained ground and stayed even with Sloat heading into the final turn, and he broke away from Sloat as he made his final approach, splitting a quick 46.02 time.

Redlands' 3:09.88 time shattered the former Thompson Aquatic Center record of 3:14.73, which a Bulldog relay set two years prior.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men and women moved to 7-2 (7-0 SCIAC) on the year while the Redlands women fell to 5-3 (5-2 SCIAC) and the Bulldog men dropped to 6-2 (6-1 SCIAC).
