Michigan State vs. Oakland

ROCHESTER, Michigan, January 29. FRESHMAN Vanessza Balogh and sophomore Sandra Czerska won three events each and freshman Amr el Sayed broke the oldest school swimming record as The Oakland University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Michigan State, Saturday afternoon.

The men (6-2) used a late burst to move past Michigan State 172-126. The women (8-1) went 1-2 in the first three individual events and never looked back in a 199-99 win over the Spartans.

"Boy, these wins mean a lot to us," said head coach Pete Hovland. "It's hard for me to single out any one swimmer today. The women won 15 of 16 events while the guys won 10. The underclassmen wanted to send our senior out in style. That is exactly what happened today. I'm proud of every single performance today."

For the women, The Golden Grizzlies won 15 events and went 1-2 in seven events. Balogh won the 200, 500 and 1000-yard freestyle events (1:52.71, 5:00.69, 10:08.75, respectively) while Czerska won the 200 individual medley (2:07.53) and the 100 and 200 butterfly (56.21, 2:03.00, respectively) events.

Oakland got two victories apiece from sophomore Alyssa Busch in the 100 and 200 backstroke events (57.48, 2:06.18, respectively), junior Johanna Gustafsson in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events (1:04.63, 2:21.62, respectively) and junior Alyssa Vela in the 50 and 100 free (24.11, 52.10, respectively).

For the men, Oakland has a close 131-113 lead with three events to go. OU then went 1-2 in each of the next two events to seal the win. The double-winners were el Sayed in the 500 and 100 free events (4:32.29, 9:21.81, respectively) and senior Marcin Unold in the 100 back (48.79) and 100 free (44.95). el Sayed's time in the 1000 free broke the school record of 9:23.83 set in 1999 by Andy Schmit.
