Bryant vs. Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vermont, January 31. THE University of Vermont women's swimming and diving team defeated Bryant at home on Saturday morning, 138-112. It was the final regular season meet for the Cats, who improve to 9-4-1 overall, and "Senior Day" for seven student-athletes.

"Today was a very good meet as all of our women, as they really stepped up and had great swims. This will help us prepare for the upcoming conference championship," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer.

Vermont won a total of 10 events and took at least the top two spots in the first six events of the meet. The Cats opened the day with a win in the 200 medley relay in a UVM freshmen record-breaking time of 1:52.61 with a team made up of Kaitlyn Evarts (Vergennes, Vt.), Caitlin Dowd (Setauket, N.Y.), Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C.) and Hannah Center (Chevy Chase, Md.). Freshman Katie Heenen (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) followed that up with a first place showing in the 1,000 free in 10:44.37.

Pittman and Evarts earned individual victories in the next two events as Pittman won the 200 free (1:58.82) and Evarts took the 100 back (1:01.01). Freshman Jillian Catoe (Bethesda, Md.) came in first in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.42), while sophomore Michelle Patrick (Jericho, Vt.) won the 200 butterfly (2:20.18).

Also earning wins for the Catamounts were senior Rachel Kent (Mystic, Conn.) in the 50 freestyle (25.43), junior Nomi Greenman (South Orange, N.J.) in the 100 free (57.56), freshman Jordan Schweizer (Evanston, Ill.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.21) and sophomore Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) in the 100 butterfly (59.74).

Saturday marked the final home meet for seven Catamount seniors. Lauren Anderson, Amrey Ferrario, Lauren Gauthier, Ashley Gillespie, Lauren Honrath, Kent and Jessica Sheridan have helped guide the Cats to four winning seasons during their time on campus, as they are the most successful class in the history of the program. Over the last four years the group has helped Vermont record 40 victories and it has improved its finish at conferences each season.

The Cats are next in action on February 19-22 when they travel to Boston University for the 2009 America East Championship.
