Arizona vs. Texas, Day One

AUSTIN, Texas, January 30. THE University of Texas women's swimming and diving team jumped out to a 107-77 lead over Arizona after the first day of their two-day dual meet this weekend, while the Arizona men held on to a 105-83 advantage over the Longhorns after 10 events.

On the women's side, freshman Kathleen Hersey picked up three wins on the night in the 400 IM (4:10.79), 200 back (1:55.54) and 100 fly (53.00). Fellow freshman Karlee Bispo added a win in the 100 free (49.59), and the two teamed up with Katie Riefenstahl and Carlye Ellis to take the women's 400 medley relay in 3:39.03.

For Arizona, Julie Stupp grabbed the 200 breast title in 2:14.71, and Alyssa Anderson was first to the wall in the 500, finishing in 4:44.33. Lara Jackson, Anna Turner, Lindsey Kelly, and Taylor Baughman led the Wildcats to a win in the opening event of the meet, taking the 200 free relay in 1:30.59.

Jessica Livingston and Kathryn Kelly dominated the 1M and 3M diving events, finishing 1-2 in both, with Kelly taking the 1M and Livingston the 3M.

On the strength of four sub-20 splits, Arizona's 200 free relay of Nicolas Oliveira, Joel Greenshields, Jordan Smith and Adam Small snagged the opening race in a quick 1:18.64, just ahead of Texas' 1:19.15. Oliveira then added a first place finish in the 100 free (43.04), just ahead of Greenshields' 43.09. Jack Brown outlasted the field in the 400 IM, winning by five seconds in 3:48.35. In the men's 200 back, Jake Tapp got his hand on the wall first in 1:45.65, while Tom Cole took the 200 breast in 1:58.64.

Ricky Berens and Jackson Wilcox finally ended Arizona's winning streak, taking the 100 fly (48.03) and 500 free (4:22.80), respectively.

Arizona closed day one with a convincing win in the 400 medley relay, finishing in 3:11.52.

Drew Livingston took the 1M diving event with 391.05 points, while Matt Cooper won the 3M with 411.06 points for Texas.

The meet will continue tomorrow at noon at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
