Gettysburg vs. Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Virginia, January 25. THE Gettysburg College men's and women's swimming teams each dropped a non-conference meet at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday.

The women's team lost by a score of 148-114 while the men's team suffered a 142-120 setback. Mary Washington's women's team stayed undefeated at 7-0 while its men's team pushed its record to 6-1.

Leading the women's team, which fell to 5-2, was junior Keira Heath (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich), who won three events for the second meet in a row. Sophomore Brian Kaehler (Manassas, Va./Brentsville) was a double winner for the men's squad, which saw its record dip to 4-2.

Heath came out in front in the 1,000-free (10:46.76), the 500-free (5:10.58), and the 200-IM (2:14.75). Her time in the 500-free was just over two seconds shy of the NCAA "B" cut.

Heath led a 1-2 finish in the 1,000, with senior Alyson Heller (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) was second in 11:03.61.

The Bullets also took first and second in the 200-fly, with freshman Mariesa Slaughter (Harrisonville, Mo./Harrisonville) winning in 2:18.15 and sophomore Johanna Persing (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) placing second in 2:19.36.

In addition, the women's 400-meter received first-place points in the 400-free relay, with senior Caitlin Reilly (Farmington, Conn./Farmington), senior Demery Close (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga), senior Emilie Youmans (South Portland, Maine/Cheverus), and sophomore Maggie Mulderrig (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep School) clocking a 3:42.52, just .25 seconds behind Mary Washington's "A" team that exhibitioned the event.

Kaehler touched first in the 100-breast (1:02.15) and the 200-breast (2:18.18) while senior Matt Rush (Lenox, Mass./Lenox) and sophomore Adam Taft (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) picked up one victory apiece. Rush triumphed in the 200-free (1:46.80) and Taft prevailed in the 200-back (1:57.29).

Mary Washington also exhibitioned its winning "A" team in the 400-free relay, but freshman Drew Close (Berywn, Pa./Haverford School), Taft, freshman Tom Everett (Timonium, Md./McDonogh School), and Rush were credited with a first-place finish in 3:18.93.

Both teams return to Centennial Conference action next Saturday, when they host Swarthmore College at 2 p.m.
