Ohio State vs. Wright State Men

COLUMBUS, Ohio, January 9. OHIO State swimming and diving, the nation's 10th–ranked dual meet team according to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, improved its record to 6-0 this season with a 186.5-99.5 win over Wright State Friday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

Swimming shorter distances – 50-, 100- and 200-yards, for instance, instead of 100s, 200s and 400s – simply as a change of pace for the swimmers, the Buckeyes excelled once again on a night that coach Bill Wadley said was all about "having fun and racing fast, whether we were fatigued from two weeks of hard work or not."

The Buckeyes won 13 of the 14 swimming events plus Burkley Showe topped all scorers on both the one- and three-meter springboard events.

Leading the way in the pool for Ohio State was sophomore Quincy Lee, who took first in the 200 freestyle and 50 butterfly. Nine other Buckeyes captured one win apiece to lead another victory that displayed the depth of Wadley's team.

Felipe Travesso, swimming the second leg of the 200 medley relay, stormed from behind to the front of the pack and Andrew Bretscher and Joel Elber held the lead the rest of the way to give the Buckeyes a meet-opening win. Itai Chammah led off for the winning team.

Brent Hitchcock, a Dayton-area native and a recent transfer to Ohio State from USC, picked up a win in his first event as a Buckeye, the 1000 freestyle. He led a 1-2-3 Ohio State finish in a time of 9:31.72. Ryan Stoneburg and Thomas O'Neil were second and third, respectively.

The Buckeyes took the top five places in the third event of the meet, the 200 freestyle. Lee touched first in 1:41.09 with Justin Farra, Markus Sievers, Jayson King and Stefan Sigrist following.

Winning for the sixth time this season in a backstroke race was Andrew Elliott. The freshman from Granger, Ind., took first in the 50 backstroke in 23.13. Other Buckeye winners in the 50-yard races were Travesso in the 50 breaststroke (25.34); and Lee in the 50 butterfly (22.74) for his second win of the night.

Freshman Alex Smit picked up his first collegiate victory with a time of 50.76 in the 100 butterfly. Teammates Niksa Roki and Chuck Allison were second and third, respectively.

Matthias Sigrist led a top four sweep for the Buckeyes in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.59 with Duncan De Wet, Yannick Van Heers and Lincoln Fahrbach in hot pursuit.

Junior co-captain Elber followed with a first-place effort in the 100 backstroke in 51.42. Sievers, Tyler King, Michael Hulme and Andrew Misich followed for another top-five Ohio State finish.

Sam Pelkey (100 breaststroke in 57.85), Mark Neiman (500 freestyle in 4:35.76) and Justin Farra (200 individual medley in 1:51.30) also picked up wins for the home team.

The final event of the evening, the 400 freestyle relay, was won by the Ohio State team of Lee, King, George Markovic and Allison in 1:18.21.

Zach Fisher (50 freestyle), a senior from Pickerington, picked up a win for the Raiders.
