ISTRES, France, December 20. IN a short course meter meet held in Istres, a French foursome obliterated the world record in the men's 400 free relay. The mark is the 107th global standard set in 2008.

Gregory Mallet (47.41), Fabien Gilot (44.92), William Meynard (47.65) and Fred Bousquet (45.00) clocked a startling time of 3:04.98. That performance demolished the previous world record of 3:08.44 set by the U.S. at the 2008 World Short Course Championships.

Ryan Lochte (47.09), Bryan Lundquist (46.64), Nathan Adrian (46.57) and Doug Van Wie (48.14) were the members of the American team that previously owned the standard.
