USA Swimming Short Course Juniors: Deborah Roth Earns Swimming World Six-Star Status

AUSTIN, Texas, December 12. DURING the second night of finals of the USA Swimming Short Course Junior Nationals, North Bay's Deborah Roth, 16, checked in with a sterling time in the women's 100 back.

Roth's performance of 53.55 would have put her into the A finals at the NCAA Division I Championships in 2008. Roth, who is a member of the Class of 2010 recruiting pool, earned her promotion to the elite six-star status in the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings powered by Take Your Marks.

Women's 200 medley relay
Baylor's Arden Pitman, Alison Lusk, Anna Gwarjanski and Sloane Pitman clocked a swift time of 1:41.83 for the win. The Bolles School's Aubrey Peacock, Caitlin Mumford, Megan Fonteno and Dana Nessler finished second in 1:42.06, while Lake Oswego's Karen Turner, Amy Wiley, Mackenzie Luick and Grace Carlson took third in 1:42.63.

Baylor's team broke the 15-18 U.S. national age group record of 1:43.16 set by Lake Country in 2005.

Men's 200 medley relay
The Bolles School's Raymond Depadua, Tommy Gutman, Timmy Romano and Matt Schlytter snagged the title in 1:30.77, while Fleet's Cole Cragin, Charlie Moore, Hunter Bayley and Shea Kenny took second in 1:32.02. Baylor's Reese Shirey, Spencer Rowe, Greg Roop and Josh Sosna placed third in 1:33.12.

Women's 400 IM
Salmon Bay's Amber McDermott, 15, remained on fire with her third title of the meet. She clocked a quick time of 4:11.36, while Magnolia's Cammile Adams, 17, claimed second in 4:13.84. Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin, 13, completed the top three in 4:16.78.

Men's 400 IM
Spokane YMCA's Mason Shaw, 16, snagged the distance medley title with a time of 3:50.45. Baylor's Martin Grodzki, 17, turned in a second-place time of 3:51.66, while Palo Alto's Ben Hinshaw, 17, picked up third in 3:53.98.

Women's 100 fly
Alamo Area's Lily Moldenhauer, 17, blazed the pool with a first-place time of 53.17. Atlantis' Jessica Guro, 17, placed second in 53.93, while Bearcat's Tori Simenec, 16, touched just behind with a third-place 53.95.

Men's 100 fly
Mason Makos' Sean Fletcher, 17, touched out Brophy East's John Wojciechowski, 16, 47.72 to 47.95. Plano's Paul Leonhardt, 16, placed third in 48.63, the same readout it took Porter Valley's Tony Cox, 18, to win the consolation final.

Women's 200 free
Fort Lauderdale's Lauren Driscoll, 15, dropped a time of 1:46.01 to win the race, while Bearcat's Tori Simenec, 16, snared second in 1:46.81. Alamo Area's Lily Moldenhauer, 17, wrapped up the top three in 1:47.72.

Men's 200 free
In an exciting finish, Pine Crest's Andre Novakoff, 18, downed Blue Tide's Matt Barber, 17, 1:37.38 to 1:37.80. Sarasota YMCA's Patrick Ceddia, 17, claimed third in 1:38.44.

Women's 100 breast
Arden Hills' Katie Edwards, 17, registered a sterling time of 1:00.83, while Canyons' Jordan Danny, 17, touched second in 1:01.19. Lake Oswego's Mackenzie Luick, 17, garnered third in 1:02.20.

Men's 100 breast
Clark County's Cody Miller, 16, cruised to the title in 54.38, while Peoria Area's Matt Elliott, 16, placed second in 55.19. The Bolles School's Tommy Gutman, 16, pocketed third in 55.52.

Women's 100 back
North Bay's Deborah Roth, 16, blasted a stellar time of 53.55 for the win. Atlantis' Jessica Guro, 17, finished second in 53.97, while West Coast's Cindy Tran, 16, placed third in 53.98.

Men's 100 back
Fleet's Cole Cragin, 17, touched out Porter Valley's Tony Cox, 18, 48.51 to 48.63, to win the title. Palo Alto's Matthew Murray, 17, completed the podium with a third-place 49.39.

Women's 800 free relay
Fort Lauderdale's Damaris Iriondo, Chelsea Britt, Lauren Driscoll and Emily Ramirez captured the close win with a 7:25.37. Parkway Swim's Hallie Stupp, Bridgette Selbert, Emily Harris and Taylor Wohrley took second in 7:25.76. The Bolles School's Megan Fonteno, Hannah Schaefer, Gracie Hoffman and Aubrey Peacock finished third in 7:27.83.

Men's 800 free relay
Palo Alto's Ben Hinshaw, Nick Trowbridge, Adam Hinshaw and Matthew Murray snagged the victory in 6:42.02, while Plano's Kyle McIntee, Seth Stubblefield, Zach Walters and Brendan McIntee finished second in 6:42.85. Clayton Shaw's Evan Noble, Daniel Miller, Charles Du and Adam Sharp placed third in 6:46.05.
