Washington Girls High School State Champs: Silvers Strike Gold

FEDERAL WAY, Washington. IT was a case of silvers striking gold at the Washington 3A Girls High school Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way on November 11. "Silver" as in the Silver sisters–Emily and Helen; "gold," as in three individual gold medals between the two Bainbridge High School girls. And "gold" as in a state high school team title for Bainbridge.

Emily Silver, a freshman,won the 50 (23.49) and 100 yard freestyle (51.24). Helen, a junior, won the 100 back in 56.42 and finished second in the 200 IM (2:06.26). Both girls swam on Bainbridge's winning 400 yard freestyle relay.

There were several other outstanding times at the 3A championship. Lauren Hill, a senior at Issaquah, clocked a blistering 2:02.86 to win the 200 IM.

Crystal Rawling, a Bellevue senior, stroked a meet record 1:50.44 in the 200 free. Anacortes sophomore rebecca Sturdy, won the 100 fly in 56.58, after settinga meet record 56.55 in prelims. Lola Woodworth, a junior at Newport, set a meet record of 1:03.45 in the 100 breast.

SNOHOMISH High won the 4A championship, also held Nov. 11 in Federal Way. Junior Erica Chandler led the way for the champions, winning the 100 (51.90) and 200 free (1:50.94).

Decatur senior Jo Hannah was the only other double winner. Hannah took the 100 fly (56.80) and 200 IM (2:05.22).
