CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee, November 22. THE Baylor School of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Science Hill High of Johnson City, Tenn., combined to set a total of 14 independent school and public school national records for a short course meter meet Friday night at the Baylor Aquatic Center.

Baylor School set 12 independent records, with five relays and seven individual swims establishing standards, while Swimming World five-star recruit Kyle Owens of Science Hill, who is heading for Auburn next year, set two public school marks.

For Baylor, the tone was set early, with the girls 200 medley relay of Arden Pitman, Alison Lusk, AnnaRae Gwarjanski, and Sloane Pitman starting the meet off with a record time of 1:54.44, breaking the record set by the Baylor girls last January of 1:58.54.

The boys 200 medley relay consisting of Reese Shirey, Spencer Rowe, Greg Roop, and Josh Sosna followed up with a record swim of 1:44.34, breaking the old record set by Baylor last January of 1:45.79.

The individual records for the Baylor girls were set by Sloane Pitman, a four-star recruit attending Tennessee next year, in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.75 and the 100 freestyle in a time of 56.59. Both these records were previously held by Christine Williams of Notre Dame High in New Jersey with times of 26.61 and 58.08 set in Feb. of 1999.

Arden Pitman, a 2008 U.S. Swimming National Junior Team member, broke the 100 backstroke record with a time of 1:00.85. The previous record of 1:03.28 was set in 1988 by Andrea Finley of the Menlo School of Atherton, Calif.

Emma Michaels broke the record in the 400 meter freestyle with a time of 4:18.81, passing the mark of 4:26.61 by Caroline Wilson of Chote-Rosemary School in Walingford, Conn.

The individual records for the Baylor boys were set by Reese Shirey, a four-star recruit heading to Alabama next year, in the 50 freestyle 23.46 and 100 backstroke, 56.26, breaking his own record of 56.60 set last January. The 50 free was held by Baylor teammate and now North Carolina Tar Heel Brad Hamilton last January of 23.56.

Martin Grodzki, a five-star recruit headed to Georgia, broke his record of 3:59.68 in the 400 freestyle, by posting a time of 3:51.32. Teammate Nathan Vredeveld was also under the old mark swimming 3:57.48.

Science Hill's Owens blazed to public school records in the 200 IM (2:02.56), breaking the record of Justin Lapin of Watertown High School of 2:03.77 set in 2003. In the 100 backstroke, Owens smashed the old standard of Kyle Bubolz from Waukesha North High of 55.62 set in 2003 with an awesome time of 53.94.

Baylor finished the meet off with three relay records. In the 200 meter free relay, the boys' team of Sosna, Roop, Matt Limerick, and Vredeveld, smoked the record set by Baylor last January of 1:36.48 with an impressive time of 1:34.65.

Both girls and boys broke long-standing records in the 400 meter free relay. The girls' squad of Michaels, Sloane Pitman, Gwarjanski, and Arden Pitman crushed the previous record of 4:03.02 set by Westminster School in 2003 with a fast 3:50.57.

In the boys' race, a record of 3:29.47 set in 1982 set by Mercersburg Academy went down as the foursome of Limerick, Shirey, Vredeveld and Grodzki went 3:26.88.

Baylor won the boys meet 210-105, and the girls meet 232-80.

"It was a pretty awesome night of racing across the board and I am proud of our kids," said Baylor head coach Dan Flack. "We have been training quite hard and I knew the kids were really itching to finally let some races rip. Some of those records have been around for a long, long time. I am especially proud of the boys 400 free relay laying it out the way they did. I raced those guys from Mercersburg way back in the day when I was at Germantown Academy. We had some fast relays but nothing compared to Rich Saeger and those guys. You also have to tip your hat to Kyle Owens, what a great kid. Auburn is getting quite a stud in him next year."

Special thanks to Baylor for contributing this report.
