Emory vs. Georgia

ATHENS, Georgia. November 21. THE Georgia swimming and diving teams head off to the Thanksgiving break with wins in hand after both squads defeated the Emory Eagles at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.

The No. 1 Lady Bulldogs extended their home-winning streak to 64 with a 137-89 victory over the Eagles, while the No. 10 men's team defeated Emory 139-90.

It was a meet in which many of the Georgia swimmers swam off events, giving the coaching staff an opportunity to see where some of its depth lies.

"All the meets have been so high pressure so far that we haven't been able to move anybody around," said head coach Jack Bauerle, who moved to 26-0 against the Eagles. "It's important for them to do other events to help some others. Emory is one of the class programs of Division III; both teams finished in the top four last year. They always have some good people, but we just had more depth and more strength."

In the pool, Georgia had only one double-winner on the evening. Mark Dylla swam to victory in the 100 backstroke in 50.84 and finished the 200 freestyle in 1:40.54, edging teammate Bill Cregar by one-hundredth of a second. In all, 13 different swimmers won events for Georgia – seven for the women and six for the men.

The Bulldogs (2-2, 0-2 SEC) finished with a 1-2 effort in the 200 medley relay, then won the next seven races to put the meet out of Emory's reach. Troyden Prinsloo took home a win in the 1,000 free in 9:19.29, Dylla won the 200 freestyle, Chris Spooner won the 50 free in 21.49, and Peter Benner was victorious in the 400 individual medley with a time of 3:51.84.

The Bulldogs then won all three 100-yard distance races. Martin Kata won the 100 butterfly in 50.29, Michael Arnold won the 100 freestyle in 46.42 and Dylla won his second race of the day in the 100 backstroke.

The Lady Bulldogs (4-0, 2-0) opened the meet by sweeping the 200 medley relay, and then won seven of the next eight swimming events. Kelsey Scott won the 1,000 free in 10:19.29, Kelsey Ditto was victorious in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.16 and Aleksandra Putra won the 400 individual medley in 4:19.58.

The Lady Bulldogs then won three consecutive 100-yard distance races. First, the 100 butterfly was won by Chelsea Nauta in 56.78, Michelle McKeehan then won the 100 freestyle in 50.77 and Morgan Scroggy touched the wall first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.91. Abbie Fish then won the 500 freestyle to round out Georgia's scoring with a time of 4:56.86.

On the boards for Georgia, Webb Worthington and Hannah Moore had strong performances as both won the 3-meter springboard events. The two also had the highest marks in the 1-meter springboard, but competed as exhibition participants.

Moore scored a 305.17 off the 3-meter and a 293.84 off the 1-meter, both of which were her top performances of the season. Worthington had the same kind of success, earning 2008-bests in the 3-meter with a score of 377.92 and a 1-meter score of 328.42.

Diving coach Dan Laak was very pleased with the efforts from all of his divers.

"Overall we did a pretty good job," he said. "Last week was the big dual meet for the year, so we kind of trained a little bit harder. This week, they might have been a little bit more tired. Webb did a great job; he had two personal bests. Lexie Bryant did a good job and Hannah obviously did a great job on both boards. Tim Barrett, Owen Blank and Landon Watters were trying some new dives that they just learned a couple of days ago and they did a really good job on them. We're progressing. That's the key thing, get better every meet."

Special thanks to Georgia from contributing this report.
