Iowa Girls High School State Championships

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa, November 8. MASON City won the state title at the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Championships with 275 points. Bettendorf and Ames followed with scores of 260 and 167.5 respectively.

Mason City won two of three relays. Courtney Busch, Emily Wiltsie, Ali Stearns, and Emma Sougstad clocked a time of 1:48.22 for a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Sougstad also won the 100 butterfly (56.68).

Senior Bailey Pons (Cedar Falls) won the 200 and 500 freestyles with times of 1:51.70 and 5:01.98 respectively.

Meredith Johnson of Marshalltown was a dual event winner in the 50 (24.16) and 100 (52.02) freestyles.

Busch and Sougstad teamed up with Anne Whalen and Loretta Kraling for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.84).

Kasey Williams (Southeast Polk) won the diving competition with a score of 385.30. Savanah Schott (Kennedy) took second (379.45) and Dahlia Gordon (Johnston) placed third (379.10).

West Des Moines Valley's Imelda Wistey set a state record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.75.

Bettendorf and Ames went head-to-head in the 400 freestyle relay. Bettendorf's Rebecca Alves, Rachael Schermer, Margaret Barber, and Molly Coonce won by .07 seconds with a time of 3:37.37. Coonce also won the 200 IM (2:05.84).
