NCAA Div. I Men: Arizona Tops USC

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 11. THE University of Arizona Wildcats dispensed with the USC Trojans, 166-134, in a battle of two top-10 teams this afternoon at the Olympic Pool in Los Angeles.

The dual meet saw some intriguing match-ups. In the first individual event, Arizona's Tyler Painter defeated Olympian Erik Vendt in the 1000 free, clocking 9:13.74 to Vendt's 9:19.61.

Vendt, the Olympic silver medalist in the 400 IM, later gained revenge, winning the medley in 3:55.05, just ahead of Painter (3:55.75) and his Trojan teammate, Mark Warkentin (3:55.85). Vendt also won the 200 breast in 2:04.27.

Painter became a double winner when he breezed to a 4:23.15 win in the 500 free.

Arizona's Jay Schryver won two, out-touching USC's Tamas Kerekjarton to take the 200 free in 1:38.41, then coming back to win the 100 free in 45.19.

Roland Schoemann won both the 50 free (20.08) and 100 fly (48.26) by wide margins.
