Wheaton vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin, November 5. THE University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming team dominated its meet against Wheaton College Friday evening, winning all 11 events in rolling to a 152-42 victory at Klotsche Natatorium. The Panthers improved to 20-1 all-time against the Thunder with the win, their ninth-straight in the all-time series.

In addition to both relay teams, Milwaukee got a pair of individual victories from sophomore Cris Smith and one win apiece from seniors Jake Kalinowski and Matt Kluczinske, sophomores Brian Verink, Nathan Welchlin, Mike Schalla and Sam Niesen and freshman Josh Kinney.

"A night like this is a confidence builder," UWM head coach Kyle Clements said. "Any time you get in the pool and swim fast, it builds up some confidence. But, what we were looking for today was to really round out the puzzle that is this team. We are trying to figure out those second and third events that these kids might be able to swim at conference. That is what we got to play with today and we saw a lot of bright spots and answered some questions."

Smith led the way in a pair of events, winning the 500 freestyle in a season-best time of 4:47.90 and the 400 IM in 4:16.51, edging out junior teammate Kyle Trelka (4:17.76).

Kalinowski won the 50 freestyle in 21.72, touching out junior Jordan Diel (21.99) for the victory. Kluczinske topped the field in the 200 backstroke in 1:57.53.
The sophomore class played a large role on the night, with Verink winning the 1000 freestyle in 10:04.74 (UWM went 1-2-3 in the event), Welchlin the 200 butterfly in 1:53.47, Schalla the 100 freestyle 48.06 and Niesen (1:47.54) touching out freshmen Jeff Maxwell (1:48.02) for a victory in the 200 freestyle.

Kinney ended the night with a win in the 200 breaststroke in a season-best 2:15.50, with the 400 medley relay (3:36.62) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.18) completing the sweep of the meet.

The Panthers are right back at it tomorrow, with a quad meet at Northwestern, taking on the host Wildcats, UIC and North Dakota starting at 1 p.m.
