Coughlin Stars at Rice Invitational

HOUSTON, Nov. 11. UNIVERSITY of California freshman Natalie Coughlin rewrote a significant chunk of the Rice Pool record book this weekend by breaking two more records Saturday at the Rice Invitational.

Coughlin set a new mark in the 500 yard freestyle at 4:51.44 and the 100 butterfly at 54.22. The 100 fly mark had stood for more than five years after Olympic silver medalist and former SMU swimmer Martina Moracova
set the record of 54.57 in Oct. 1995.

Coughlin now owns four Rice Pool records after breaking records in the 200 free, 200 back and 100 free Friday night in the Continental Airlines
Classic.

Rice swimmers held their own at the meet. Sophomore Mandy Mularz took the 50 free in 24.09, just ahead of
Olympic gold medalist Samantha Arsenault of Michigan in 24.19 and teammate junior Katie Hermann in 24.43. Mularz also recorded the top time in the 100 free at 53.13.

Junior Rachel Armstong finished first in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.32, edging out Illinois All-American Jessica Aveyard at 1:55.60 and teammate junior Katie Scholl at 1:55.76.

In a sibling rivalry matchup, Jordan Hollsten, a junior at Rice, and sister Shannon, a freshman at Missouri, were paired in adjacent lanes for the 200 back. Jordan clocked a 2:09.07 to edge out Shannon's 2:10.62. Aveyard won the event in 2:03.62.

In other close races, teammates Kristen Woodring and Corrie Clark of Penn State recorded identical winning times of 1:05.75 in the 100 breaststroke. Illinois' Crystal McAdam took the 200 individual medley in
2:07.89, just ahead of Penn State's Jenna Lopano at 2:07.91.

In all, 9 Rice Pool records fell during the weekend –seven on Friday, two on Saturday.
