Sacred Heart vs. Mount St. Mary’s

EMMITSBURG, Maryland, October 25. JUNIOR Johanna Kos (Feeding Hills, MA) and sophomore Jackie Balder (Levittown, NY) each were part of two event wins and Sacred Heart won seven of 11 events as the Pioneers swimming and diving team posted a 103-95 victory over Mount St. Mary's Saturday afternoon in the season opening meet for both teams.

Kos led the Pioneers' 400 meter medley relay team to a meet-opening victory and followed that up with a win in the 200 IM with a time of 2:32.71. Balder was the freestyle specialist for the Pioneers taking first in the 400 meter and 800 meter events.

Other multiple event winners included sophomore Katie Marshall (Cumberland, RI) and freshman Laurie Casado (Queens, NY). Marshall swam on the winning medley relay team and then took first in the 200 meter butterfly with a time of 2:25.31, bettering the field by almost four seconds. In her first collegiate meet, Casado also swam in the medley group and later won the 200 meter breaststroke.

Also picking up a win in her first meet was freshman Allison Thurston (Berlin, CT), who placed first in the 200 meter backstroke.

The Pioneers are back in the pool next Sunday when they take on defending NEC champion Central Connecticut. The meet begins at 2:00 pm.
