Army vs. Massachusetts

AMHERST, Massachusetts, October 25. THE men's and women's swimming and diving teams dominated against Army in their first home meet of the season. This win was the first ever against Army for the men's team in four all-time meetings, as they defeated Army 174-126, while the women's team took their fourth all-time win in three meetings against Army as they won by a score of 187-94.

Senior Christa Narus (Stony Brook, Mass.) and sophomore Elizabeth Walsh (Marshfield, Mass.) led the women's team past Army with two individual wins apiece as the Minutewomen won 13 of the 16 events on the day. Narus placed first in the 200 free (1:55.19) and the 200 fly (2:06.84) as she and Walsh also took first in the 200 medley relay (1:50.01) swimming the third and first legs respectively. Walsh won both of her individual events as she competed in the 100 back (1:00.00) and 200 back (2:10.03).

The Minutewomen showed their team depth against Army sweeping many events and placing numerous swimmers in all events. The women brought home top three finishes in the 100 breast, 200 fly, 50 free, and the 200 medley relay.

The women's team's youth also stood out against Army as freshman Chelsea Downing (Hatchville, Mass.) finished first in the 1000 free (10:45.04) and second in the 500 free (5:18.68) in her first career meet, and sophomore Meghan Nowak (Medway, Mass.) took first in the 200 breast (2:29.14) and second in the 100 breast (1:10.47).

Divers Anne Fogerty (Allentown, Pa.) and Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.) split both of their events as Fogerty won the one-meter dive with a score of 252.22 and placed second in the three-meter (241.27). Upperco finished first in the three-meter dive (277.80) and took second in the one-meter dive (248.16). Senior Sarah Hortsmann (Hockessin, Del.) rounded out the top three with a score of 221.31 in the three-meter dive.

The men's team took home 12 of the 16 events on the day, three of those going to freshman Joey Sbordon (Franklin, Mass.). Sbordon had an outstanding performance as he won all three of his individual events, the 1000 free (9:45.40), the 200 free (1:42.39), and the 500 free (4:40.68) while also helping the 400 free relay team to a second place finish.

Juniors Juan Moliere (San Juan, P.R.) and Mike Berthaume (Hampden, Mass.) also had a day of top finishes as they both won their two individual events and were members of the first-place 200 medley relay team (1:35.47). Berthaume competed in the 100 fly (51.88) and 200 fly (1:56.08) while Moliere dominated his usual 50 free (21.16) and 100 free (47.23).

Max Butler (Duxbury, Mass.) was also a member of the first-place 200 medley relay team, swimming the first leg of the relay and also won the 200 back (1:55.61). As a consistent point contributor in the win, Butler added a couple of third-place finishes in the 100 back (54.49) and the 200 IM (2:01.37).

Freshman Jason Cook (Amherst, Mass.) dominated the board today as UMass took the top three spots in both diving events. Cook took first in both dives scoring 295.98 in the one-meter dive, and 297.83 in the three-meter dive. Junior Byron Johnson (Taunton, Mass.) took second in both events scoring 267.00 and 27.43 in the one-meter and three-meter respectively. Sophomore Adam Duffield (Brookfield, Conn.) evened things out as he took third in both events with scores of 236.63 in the one-meter and 269.40 in the three-meter.

The Minutemen and women will return to action next Saturday as they head to Stony Brook for a 1 p.m. meet.
