Meet of the Week: Northwestern at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, October 24. THE Indiana Hoosiers protected their turf in a SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week against Northwestern. The IU men downed NU, 158-129, while the Hoosier women topped the Wildcats, 172.5-127.5.

Aaron Opell and Matt Lenton led the way for the Hoosier men with a title trifecta each. Opell helped the 400 medley relay squad of Eric Ress, Opell, Mathew O'Brien and Ante Zoricic won in 3:23.61. He also won the 100 breast (57.17) and 200 breast (2:04.71) events. Lenton, meanwhile, anchored the 400 freestyle relay team of Titus Knight, Zoricic, Bryan Chovanec and Lenton to a win in 3:00.99. He also claimed crowns in the 50 free (20.32) and 100 free (45.19). Additionally, he would have won the 100 fly in 49.91 if not for IU exhibitioning him thus giving the title-win to Chris Doman of Northwestern in 51.71.

Eric Nilsson led the Wildcats with a pair of victories. He triumphed in the 200 free (1:37.48) and 500 free (4:25.90).

In diving, Landon Marzullo (352.30) and Linus Altman-Kurpsaki (319.35) both qualified for zones in the one-meter with the top two scores for Indiana. Additionally, Marzullo (393.05) won the three-meter with a zone-qualifying score, while Alex Kiaie of Northwestern also cleared the zone standard with a second-place 320.15.

While Northwestern took the loss, Kassia Shishkoff performed well with four wins, including a pair of B cuts. She cleared the B-cut standard in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.15, and also dipped under the B-cut threshold in the 500 free with a time of 4:48.95. Additionally, she won the 400 IM (4:21.02) and anchored the 400 free relay team of Teisha Lightbourne, Emily Wong, Shelby Johnson and Shishkoff to a win in 3:26.51.

Kate Zubkova shined for the Hoosiers with four wins of her own. She led the 400 medley relay quartet of Zubkova, Sarah Stockwell, Donna Smailis and Margaux Farrell to a winning time of 3:45.47, while also winning the 100 back (55.34), 200 back (1:59.44) and 100 fly (55.27).

Additionally, IU's Brittany Barwegen posted a B-cut time in the 200 fly with a readout of 1:59.11.

In diving, plenty of competitors cleared the one-meter zone standard as Brittney Feldman (311.80), Christina Loukas (304.35), Amy Korthauer (284.70), Christina Kouklakis (279.30) and Gabrielle Agustino (278.55) all qualified for zones for the Hoosiers.

A host of Hoosier divers also broke the zone threshold in the three-meter as Feldman (341.50), Loukas (312.10), Kouklakis (297.50) and Korthauer (281.50) all made the cut.
