Ditoro, Owen Are Standouts at Arizona 4A Boys High School Champs; Catalina Foothills Captures Team Title -- November 4, 2000
TEMPE, Arizona, November 4. CHAPARRAL High School senior Dan Ditoro and Saguaro High junior Matt Owen both won two events at the Arizona 4A Boys High School State Championships in Tempe, November 3 and 4. But Catalina Foothills took the team title with 291 points. Arcadia followed with 251, while Thunderbird edged Chaparral for third , 185 to 184.
Catalina Foothills also captured the girls team title to make it a sweep of the state 4A team championships.
Ditoro set the only state record (all divisions)when he swam the 100 yard butterfly in 49.37 in prelims before coming back to take the finals in 51.21. He also took the 50 free in 21.50.
Owen snapped a state 4A record in winning the 200 free in 1:41.37, then later added the 500 in 4:31.76.
Two other 4A on a cold and occasionally rainy weekend in Tempe: Chaparral senior Evan Rahaueser swam 1:53.96 to win the 200 IM, while the Arcadia 200 medley relay squad touched in 1:38.90.
Other winners were: Centennial junior Russell Hulse, who joined his sister Cuffy, as winner of the one-meter diving (431.05 points); Cholla junior Jake Miller, who took the 100 free (47.62); Arcadia senior Nick Eggen who took the 100 back in 51.94 (51.78p);
and Catalina Foothills junior James McManus, who won the 100 breast (59.09).
Catalina Foothills in the 200 free relay (1:29.53); Arcadia in the 400 free relay (3:12.77).
