Meet of the Week Recap: Southwestern at McMurry

By Jason Marsteller

ABILENE, Texas, October 12. OVER the weekend, Southwestern went into McMurry's house and came away with a pair of victories. The men triumphed, 120-83, while the women's came out on top, 116-87.

"I'm really proud of how our kids swam," Southwestern head coach Steve Brandt told Swimming World. "Both the men and the women stepped up and raced really well. After the first relay, I don't think we lost a close race the rest of the afternoon. The guys were really up for this meet and I think it showed. We had a lot of contribution from our first-years, but the upperclassmen also stepped up their level of performance from dual meets in the past. I'm excited about the progress our program has made over the past few years, and I'm looking forward to seeing how much we can grow as a team this season."

Amber Perkins of McMurry led the women with three titles, while Evan Firth of Southwestern claimed a title trifecta of his own to lead the men.

Perkins walked away with individual crowns in the 1000-yard free (11:01.77) and 500-yard free (5:19.61), while also anchoring the winning 200-yard medley relay squad of Marlee Hager, Sarah Duerr, Erin Johnson and Perkins to victory in 1:54.44. The relay proved to be exciting as McMurry touched out Southwestern's team of Sarah Ayers, Alana Bergfield, Rita Carlson-Stadler and Jessie Carrier by the slimmest of margins, 1:54.44 to 1:54.45.

Firth, meanwhile, grabbed wins in the 200-yard IM (2:02.30), 100-yard fly (56.28) and 500-yard free (5:04.11) to pace Southwestern's attack.

There were several double-dippers during the meet as well. Southwestern's double-winners for the women included Bailey Thompson, Carrier, Bergfield and Michelle Comerota.

Thompson won the 200-yard free (2:06.06) and anchored the 400-yard free relay of Carrier, Ayers, Comerota and Thompson to a win in 3:54.38. On top of the relay win, Carrier also claimed the 50-yard free title in 25.57, while Bergfield won the 200-yard IM (2:18.20) and 100-yard breast (1:11.67). Comerota also touched first in the 100-yard free (58.13).

Hager and Johnson both won a pair of titles for McMurry. Hager captured the 100-yard back (1:03.12), while Johnson won the 100-yard fly (1:01.56) on top of their earlier relay triumph.

For the men, Southwestern's Taylor Steele, Travis Macha and Dustin McCammon each won a pair of titles, while Craig Osterman did the same for McMurry.

Steele won the 200-yard free (1:56.84) and helped the 400-yard free relay of Macha, Alex Carmona, Steele and McCammon to a win in 3:25.07. On top of the relay win, Macha claimed the 50-yard free (22.29), while McCammon topped the 100-yard back (58.88).

Osterman, meanwhile, captured the 100-yard free (49.26) and helped the 200-yard medley relay of Scott Eakin, Daniel Harbor, Osterman and Josh Clark touch first in 1:49.71.
