Xavier, West Virginia, East Carolina vs. Marshall

HUNTINGTON, West Virginia, October 11. SIOBHAN Schuurman won the three-meter and one-meter diving events to pace the Marshall swimming and diving team in its season opener Saturday at the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.

The Herd picked up a win over Xavier but fell to two very strong teams in East Carolina and West Virginia. On the men's side, WVU bested both ECU and Xavier while the Pirates picked up a win over the Musketeers.

Schuurman recorded scores of 247.24 in the one-meter and 234.20 in the three meter respectively. Senior Rachel Hannum was fourth in the one-meter and third in the three-meter with scores 190.75 and 204.95 respectively.

"I though that the divers competed really well today," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "It's always good to see them come out and perform this well so early in the season."

On the swimming side, Jessica Sweeney finished in fourth-place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:40.07. Fellow Herd swimmer Lindsey Stock finished just behind her in fifth, clocking in at 10:43.80

Senior Kayla Truswell also performed well with third-place finishes in both the 100 and 200 butterfly events. Truswell swam a 2:08.98 in the 200 and a 59.86 in the 100.

"We just got a little behind in the meet early, and it seemed like we struggled from then on," Kraus said. "It was the first meet of the year and we look forward to improving over the next few weeks."

Marshall will be at home again next week for the second of a three-meet homestand as it faces Radford on Saturday at 2 p.m.
