Passages: Former USC NCAA Champion Mark Mader, 60 -- September 12, 2008

LOS ANGELES, California, September 12. MARK Mader, an eight-time All-American swimmer at USC who was a member of three NCAA championship relay teams, died Sept. 4 in Pullman, Wash., of cancer. He was 60.

Mader, a 3-year (1968-70) letterman at USC, swam a leg on USC's NCAA champion 800-yard freestyle relay squads in both 1969 and 1970 and also was part of the Trojans' 1970 NCAA champion 400-yard freestyle relay team.

He also won 4 Pac-8 titles in 1968 in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events, as well as part of the 800-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay. In 1969, he was on the Pac-10 champion 800-yard freestyle relay team.


He was a member of USC swim teams that finished second at the 1969 and 1970 NCAA meets, as well as third in 1968. The Trojans won Pac-8 crowns in 1968 and 1969, the placed second in 1970.

He also won 3 AAU Meet titles (including setting an American record in the 200 backstroke) and a silver medal at the 1967 World University Games.

At 6-9, he was one of the tallest swimmers in USC history.

After college, he became a wheat farmer in Pullman.

He attended Pullman High, where he was a world-class backstroker.

He is survived by his brother, Greg Mader, who also was a swimmer at USC.
