COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, August 21. ACCORDING to a report by Broadcasting & Cable, NBC has signed on to broadcast swimming at the 2009 World Championships and the U.S. National Championships from 2009-11 on nationwide television.
According to the article, "NBC will provide weekend coverage of the 2009 World Championships July 26 and Aug. 1-2, 2009, with co-owned digital channel Universal Sports providing midweek coverage."
Information has yet to be released on broadcast plans for the U.S. National Championships. However, the move should lead to much more exposure for the sport across NBC's nationwide delivery platform.
Universal Sports, formerly known as the World Championship Sports Network, is a strategic partner of Swimming World Magazine.

August 21, 2008 I am only truly happy about this if they show the same kind of respect for the sport that WCSN did. Hopefully they will also learn to understand that there is more one swimmer in the pool, that not all swimmers are American, and that not all swimmers make it to finals. In Australia they televised heats, semis and finals.
Before, when swimming was televised by people other than NBC, they were on channels that were available only to people who had cable. So the move to NBC will definitely expose more people to the sport.
After the way swimming was treated, or I should say mistreated by NBC during the Olympics, I feel a little wary of what their coverage will do for and to the sport. Submitted by: laurenish
August 22, 2008 This is great! Before when (and IF) swimming was ever broadcasted on TV it was on an obscure cable channel that most people would not have (like ESPN 2 or something).
But I do feel a bit uneasy about it. I know that Phelps was the star of the Watercube and really it is becuase of him that the World Championships will be broadcasted next year but he is the ONLY swimmer that NBC focuses on and it is rather irritating. I mean at the medal ceremony for the 4x100 medley relay, the camera panned to the entire relay team ONCE and then focused on Phelps the rest of the time and that didn't sit right with me. There are three other members of that relay. *sigh*
Oh well. A little bit at a time I guess. Submitted by: Maggie
