Canadian Summer Open Nationals: Julia Wilkinson Downs Another Canadian Record

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, July 19. A day after taking down the Canadian record in the 100 back, Julia Wilkinson was back at it during the 50 back prelims of the Canadian Summer Open Nationals.

Wilkinson clocked a time of 28.53 during prelims to break her record of 28.63 set earlier this year. Wilkinson came back to win the finale this morning in 28.93. Jennifer Carroll (29.33) and Hanna Kubas (29.41) took second and third, respectively.

Matt Rose then won the men's 50 back in 26.39, while Eric Olesen finished second in 26.92. Jake Tapp rounded out the top three in 26.98.

The 400 frees were up next. Stephanie Horner cruised in the women's event with a 4:11.70, while Barbara Jardin (4:15.91) and Alexa Komarnycky (4:17.54) finished second and third.

Ryan Cochrane dominated in the men's race with a 3:51.93. Ray Betuzzi (3:58.46) and Sean Penhale (4:01.31) finished well behind to complete the podium.

MacKenzie Downing came within a second of her national record in the women's 100 fly with a 59.80. She owns the current record with a 58.88 from last year. Audrey Lacroix (1:00.21) and Kendra Chernoff (1:00.50) touched second and third.

Jason Dunford topped the men's 100 fly with a time of 52.86, while Thomas Kindler took second in 54.09. Adam Sioui placed third in 54.17.

Elizabeth Wycliffe followed in the women's 200 back with a time of 2:12.68. Katy Murdoch touched second in 2:13.26, while Lindsay Seemann picked up third in 2:13.97.

Tobias Oriwol then claimed the men's 200 back in 1:59.69 with Keith Beavers (2:00.79) and Matthew Swanston (2:00.99) earning second and third.

The 400 free relays completed the morning. Heather MacLean, Sasha Menu-Courey, Jacqueline Keire and Komarnycky won the women's title in 3:51.44, while Brent Hayden, Brian Johns, Scott Dickens and Rory Biskupski captured the men's crown in 3:19.65.
