USA Swimming Sectionals, Brown Deer: Several Close Calls During First Night

BROWN DEER, Wisconsin, July 17. THERE were several close finishes during the first night of swimming at the USA Swimming Sectional held in Brown Deer.

Rachel Bootsma, 14, of Aquajets claimed the first title on offer with a time of 57.68 in the women's 100 free. Betsy Webb, 17, of New Trier finished second in 58.04, while Christine Kuczek of the Iowa City Eels placed third in 58.46.

Conor Dwyer of Lake Forest followed with a time of 51.27 to win the men's 100 free. Schroeder YMCA's Adam Mania (51.47) and Josh Baseheart (51.55) rounded out the top three.

Abby Duncan, 15, earned the women's 200 breast in 2:35.88, while Julie Andracki, 17, of Arlington (2:36.65) and Alexa Hamilton of Barrington (2:37.25) claimed second and third, respectively.

The men's 200 breast went to Matt Elliott, 15, of Peoria Area in 2:19.13. Will Orlady of Team Foxjet took second in 2:21.18, while Kendrick Bachman, 17, of Rochester finished third in 2:24.13.

Emma Goral, 15, of Lake Country cruised in the women's 200 fly with a time of 2:15.06, while Kally Fayhee, 17, of the Academy Bullets touched second in 2:18.83. Annalise Colton, 17, of Edina pocketed third in 2:19.08.

Sam Wilcher of Arlington won a close battle with Victor Leclere of Schroeder, 2:02.99 to 2:03.21, in the men's 200 fly. Dan Zabler of Black Hawk picked up third in 2:04.61.

In the distance frees, Danielle Beckwith of Badger Aquatics won the women's 800 in 9:00.36. Ashley Dell of Lake Forest (9:01.19) and Aja Van Hout, 15, of Badger (9:04.16) took second and third.

Nico Zebley of Minnesota then won the men's 800 in 8:28.85. Luke Bushman, 17, of Green Bay (8:30.28) and Dwyer (8:33.59) made up the rest of the top three.
