Phillips 66 National Swimming Championships: Day 5

Chad Carvin became the second man since Mark Spitz to win four U.S. titles in one national championship.

Carvin won his fourth national title in the 1500m freestyle with a time of 15:29.44 on the final day of the U.S. National Swimming Championships. The other U.S. swimmer to win four in one meet was Tom Dolan at the 1994 Spring Nationals.

Other winners included Olympic gold medalist Brooke Bennett, who swam a lifetime best in the 1500m freestyle in a time of 16:13.89, making her the sixth fastest American ever in the event.

Jenny Thompson and Bill Pilczuk won the 50m freestyle titles. It was Thompson’s 17th national title, the most career titles by any active swimmer.

Jennifer Parmenter swept the IM events for the third time at a U.S. nationals in two years. Parmenter won the 200 IM in 2:15.97. She won the 400 IM Friday.

Ron Karnaugh, at 30, the oldest man in the competition, won the 200 IM in a time of 2:03.43.
