Trying to decipher what that message meant slickwillie. Sorry if I'm being a bit slow, just that you know Matt came 4th in the 100 fly at trials, yeah?
June 26, 2008 Good point about 800 free relay.
Since it is a part of the current FINA World Championship proram and since it involves only swimmers who go the 200 free, it should cdertainly be retained.
The way I figure it, my proposal for an scm Olympics could begin with the '20 Games here in Los Angeles (UCLA's new Spie3ker Aquatics Complex would be a perfect venue).
That way all swimemrs now training distance or evens thinking about i twould have a dozen yers to complete their careers ,a perfectly reasonable time frame.
Even the '19 Worlds in LA could be lcm so distance-oriented athletes would have two more Olympics and six Worlds to do their thing.
But in exchangge for leaving in the 800 free rekay we would have to have the two 200 relayhs, i.e., free and medley, added to the World and Olympic programs.
(Hey, they're the most exciting relays on the planetso who wouldn't want them addeed?)

As for Mr. Targett not making it to Beijing in 100 fly, thus possibly precluding an all-Auburn/SEC one-two finish, well I'm sure the top two Aussies in that race (Andrew Lauterstein, Adam Pine) would be qite willing to relinquish their spots since Targett's already on the team in teh freestyle sprints.
Iff Targett doesn't swim the shorter fly race there's still the possibility of a one-two SEC finish with Auburn's Fred Bousquet and Tennessee's Octavio Alesi going one-two.
Or maybe it'll be a Pac-10 sweeph with Arizona's Albert Subriats and Cal's Michael Cavic edging out Golden Bear Nathan Adrian.
Certainly the Big 12 doesn't have any current or former sprint flyers of any consequence does it?
Lest the Big Ten feel neglected, it could be argued that Michael Phelps is an ex-officio Big Tener, having spent his last four years in Ann Arbor as a volunteer assistant coach for the maize and blue.
Of course Phelps grew up in Masryland so he probably has allegiances to the Terrapins and the ACC to. Maybe he can be considered half Big Ten, half Atlantic Coast Conference.
Lest we forget, former Northwestern NCAA champ Matt Grevers, now training @ Arizona, could also be in the 100 fly mix.
Arizona also has South Africa's Lyndon Ferns, no mean 100 flyer he, along with Japan's Mzsayuki Kishida (51.88 @ Japan Trials).
While Kishida never competed collegiately for the Wildcats he has been training in Tucson for the last several years. So similar to Phelps he too could be cconsidered an "ex-offico "American collegian."
One other Pac-10er who could make wves in Beijing is Stanford's (and Kenya's) Jason Dunford, or perhaps even his younger b rogtehr David.
In any event, however things turn out, it should be an all-NCAA 100 fly podium finish @ The Big O's with nobody else even close!
