SARASOTA, Florida, June 18. BURWELL "Bumpy" Jones, 75, really enjoyed aging up at the meet named in his honor, the Bumpy Jones Classic, this past weekend as Jones knocked down several Masters world records in the 75-79 age division.
Jones notched a time of 6:52.51 in the 400 IM to clear the previous mark of 7:08.74 set by Graham Johnston in 2007, while also breaking the 200 back with a 3:00.32. Roger Franks held the previous standard with a 3:10.25 from 2002.
Jones also broke the 100 back with a time of 1:23.14, downing the old record of 1:26.00 shared by Keijiro Nakamura of Japan in 1998 and Clarke Mitchell of the U.S. in 2007. Meanwhile, Jones stopped the clock in 3:09.97 in the men's 200 IM to break Johnston's record of 3:13.53 set in 2006.

Jones, who won a gold medal in the 1952 Olympics, just survived a battle with prostate cancer. Overall, Jones has broken more than 40 FINA world records and is a member of the Sarasota YMCA Sharks Masters team.
In other action at the meet, Deb Walker, 57, of Sarasota set a pair of USMS marks in the women's 55-59 division with time of 1:29.37 in the 100 breast and 3:17.40 in the 200 breast.

July 18, 2008 The relay swimmers in 1952 prelims were Wally Wolf, Don Sheff, Frank Dooley and Bumpy Jones. None of those were given gold medals because the final team of Bill Woolsey, Ford Konno, Wayne Moore and Jim McLane won the event. Please correct your story. Submitted by: gailswim
