Mare Nostrum, Barcelona: Leisel Jones Just Misses 200 Breast World Record

BARCELONA, Spain, June 10. LETHAL Leisel Jones was at it again in the Mare Nostrum series, this time coming up just .04 seconds shy of her world record in the women's 200 breast at the Barcelona stop.

Jones ripped off a time of 2:20.58 with splits of 32.85, 1:08.71 (35.86), 1:44.55 (35.84) and 2:20.58 (36.03) en route to the second-fastest time ever. She currently holds the world record with a 2:20.54 from 2006 where she split the race 32.19, 1:08.52 (36.33), 1:45.02 (36.50) and 2:20.54 (35.52). Jones is going to make 2:20 routine if she keeps it up, as she already holds at least three instances in the range with her world record, today's swim and a 2:20.72 from 2006 as well.

Mirna Jukic finished second in the race in 2:24.20, while Sally Foster placed third in 2:25.80. Jukic's time surpassed her national record of 2:24.58 set in March.

Jones also touched first in the women's 50 breast earlier in the day with a time of 30.84. Teammate Tarnee White placed second in 30.90, while Jukic finished third in 31.61 – just missing her national record of 31.59.

Meanwhile, Wendy Trott won the women's 800 free in a meet-record 8:26.88, while Spain's Erika Villaecija Garcia took second in 8:28.38. Australia's Linda Mackenzie finished third in 8:29.73. Trott blasted her South African record of 8:28.77 set at the Sette Colli meet this weekend.

In the men's 50 back, South Africa's Gerhard Zandberg touched first in a meet-record 25.05, while Australia's Ashley Delaney placed second in 25.28 and Brazil's Guilherme Guido took third in 25.59.

Andrew Lauterstein snagged the men's 50 fly title in 23.91, while Australian teammate Garth Kates took second in 24.02 and Denmark's Jakob Andkjaer touched third in 24.20.

World-record holder Stephanie Rice followed in the women's 400 IM with a time of 4:35.42, while Mireia Belmonte Garcia finished second in 4:39.09 and Hungary's Zsuzsanna Jakabos placed third in 4:40.53. Belmonte Garcia clipped her Spanish record of 4:39.17 set in April.

In another men's sprint shootout, Eamon Sullivan downed Stefan Nystrand, 48.46 to 49.36, in the men's 100 free. Lauterstein placed third in 49.55, while Cesar Cielo took fourth in 49.61.

The women's 100 back came next with Australia going 1-2. Emily Seebohm wrapped up the title in 1:00.58, while Belinda Hocking took second in 1:00.65. Spain's Nina Zhivanevskaya placed third in 1:00.74.

Alexander Dale Oen touched out Brenton Rickard in the men's 100 breast, 1:00.72 to 1:00.98, while Ukraine's Igor Borysik finished third in 1:01.26.

Meanwhile, Josefin Lillhage of Sweden edged Flavia Cazziolato of Brazil, 25.35 to 25.39, in the women's 50 free, while Alice Mills took third in 25.47.

In the men's 200 back, Ashley Delaney snatched the title in 1:57.22 with Razvan Florea taking second in 1:57.80. Gordan Kozulj rounded out the podium in 2:00.15.

Dinko Jukic earned the gold in the men's 200 fly with a time of 1:55.94, while Kaio Almedia took second in 1:56.80 for Brazil. Sebastien Rousseau of South Africa finished third in 1:59.17.

Felicity Galvez claimed the title going away in the women's 100 fly with a 57.60, while Paula Daynara of Brazil took second in 59.20 and Sarah Sjostrom touched third in 59.34.

Thiago Pereira scared his meet record of 1:59.47 from last year with a winning time of 1:59.54 in the men's 200 IM. Alan Cabello Forns wound up second in 2:02.73, while Vadym Lepskii took third in 2:03.03.

Mackenzie followed with a victory in the women's 200 free in 1:58.82, while Lillhage took second in 1:59.46. Angie Bainbridge grabbed third in 1:59.58.

Patrick Murphy completed the first day with a triumph in the men's 400 free in 3:51.97. Andrew Hurd took second in 3:52.44, while Dragos Coman placed third in 3:52.46.
