Japanese Swimming Federation Opens Up Suit Restrictions for Swimmers

TOKYO, Japan, June 10. AFTER an incredible weekend during which Kosuke Kitajima set the 200 breast world record while wearing a Speedo LZR Racer, the Japanese Swimming Federation had a previously planned meeting to discuss its strict contract with three manufacturers.

According to an article in CBC Sports, the Federation made the decision to allow its swimmers to wear any suits they desire at the 2008 Beijing Games. This comes in direct contradiction to the Federation's agreement with Mizuno, Asics and Descente. The Federation looks to be opening itself up to possible action from the three swimsuit manufacturers, but has elected to give its swimmers the freedom to make their own choice by lifting the restrictions.

"In order to get the best results in Beijing, we took into account the opinions of the athletes and coaches," Japanese Swimming Federation vice chairman Kazuo Sano told CBC Sports.
