TOPEKA, Kansas, June 11. FOR the first time since 1997, the Overland Park-Blue Valley Northwest women are Kansas state champions.

Overland Park-Blue Valley Northwest gathered 226 points throughout the meet, which was enough for the team title. Lawrence-Free State accumulated 208 points and took second whiel Olathe-Northwest came in third with 200 points.

Lawrence-Free State kicked off the meet in record-setting fashion. The quartet of Molly Albrecht, Reilly Moore, Chloe Portela and Morgan Flannigan set a state record in the 200 medley relay, combining their talents to win in 1:47.40. Wichita-Trinity Academy set the former mark of 1:48.49 in 2004. The same four women (Moore, Albrecht, Portela and Flannigan) put together a second record-setting performance at the end of the meet, taking the 400 freestyle relay in 3:33.93. The quartet bettered the former standard of 3:34.62, which Wichita-Trinity Academy set last year.

Dicus went on to win the 100 backstroke as well, taking the event in a record time of 55.84. Jamie Bruce from Wichita-Trinity Academy, the sister of recent Stanford graduate and Kansas swimming legend Caroline Bruce, carried on the family tradition of winning state titles in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. Bruce won the 200 IM by just more than two seconds with a time of 2:03.40. She claimed her second gold of the meet in the 100 breaststroke, clocking a swift 1:03.09.

Maddy Delcamo from Olathe-Northwest notched wins in both sprint freestyle events. She muscled her way to a 23.75 50 freestyle before swimming the 100 freestyle in 51.29.
