Nevada High School State Championships -- May 21, 2008

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, May 21. AN 11-year-old diving record at the Nevada State Championship meet fell when Ciera Courtney of Bishop Gorman won the women's diving competition with a score of 488.55.

Aubrie Cooper of Green Valley held the former mark of 462.70, which she set in 1997.

Edith Feld from Foothill took second in the women's competition with a 388.10 score while Crysta Imahara of Green Valley finished in third (372.05).

On the men's side of the diving competition, Edward Kollar of Douglas reigned supreme with a score of 426.10. Blake Bitton from Green Valley earned the silver with a 410.30 score while Green Valley's Ryan Chatwin placed third, scoring a 385.70.

Women's Individual Results
The only other state record that fell came by means of Jordyn Green of Reno in the 100 breaststroke. Green lambasted the field, winning by eight seconds in a time of 1:02.24. Green's time eclipsed the former record of 1:03.50 set by Katy Houston of Robert McQueen in 2003. In addition, Green took home the 200 IM title (2:06.44).

Sierra Vista's Helen Yee powered her way to two individual event wins. Yee won with a 24.07 50 freestyle before coming back in the 100 freestyle to win in 52.01.

Addie Oswald from Silverado outperformed the field in each of the longer-distance freestyle events. Oswald touched out Madison Gray of Lowry in the 200 freestyle, clocking a 1:54.46, and she went on to win the 500 freestyle as well (5:06.26).

Reno won the first and last relay of the meet. Reno's 200 medley relay posted a time of 1:51.87 while its 400 freestyle relay closed out the women's competition with a time of 3:38.60.

Men's Individual Results
Coronado's Martin Vanis went 2-for-2 in his individual events, winning the 50 freestyle in 21.41 and the 100 butterfly in 51.20.

Zane Grothe from Boulder City easily won the 200 and the 500 freestyles, taking the 200 in 1:41.96 and the 500 in 4:39.04.

Cody Miller from Palo Verde rounded out the double event winners for the men. Miller clocked a 1:54.30 200 IM before edging Robert Hommel of Green Valley in the 100 breaststroke (58.47) for first.

Palo Verde fielded two first-place relay teams. Palo Verdo clocked a 1:38.41 200 medley relay and turned in a 1:28.32 200 freestyle relay.

Team Scores
Reno stood atop the leader board at the end of the day for the women, compiling 102 points. Palo Verde finished the meet up in second with 66 points while Coronado rounded out the top three with 46 points.

Palo Verde proved to be the class of the men's meet, taking home the team title with 110 points. Reno edged Green Valley in a battle for second by a score of 69-66.
