California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division II High School State Championships

LONG BEACH, California, May 15. HART and La Canada won the men's and women's titles, respectively, in the second of four division championships in the CIF Southern Section.

Team Scores
Hart compiled 207.5 points en route to taking the Division II women's championship. Westlake accumulated 165 points and placed second while Flintridge Sacred Heart came in third (139).

A closer matchup ensued on the men's side as La Canada edged Loyola by a final score of 236-221. Hart raked in 188 points and took third.

Women's Individual Results
Yumi So of Crescenta Valley reset her 2007 division record of 55.05 in the 100 butterfly with a 54.42 time in finals. So also mined gold in the 100 backstroke, breaking the 56-second barrier with a 55.95 performance.

Chaminade's Megan Hawthorne finished out the day with two impressive individual event wins. Hawthorne, a sophomore, clocked a 2:00.93 200 IM before checking in with a 4:49.46 time in the 500 freestyle.

Gretchen Jaques representing Glendora monopolized the podium's apex in the sprint freestyle events. She muscled out a 23.20 win in the 50 freestyle and a 50.39 victory in the 100 freestyle.

Jordan Danny from Hart set a division record with a 1:01.96 swim in finals. Her time improved upon the former mark of 1:02.71, which Stephanie Gabert of Corona del Mar set in 2005. In addition, Danny placed fourth in the 200 IM (2:03.18).

Westlake went 2-for-3 in the relay events, setting a division record in one of the two relays. The relay consisting of Jackie Brousseau, Iris Yan, Marissa DeWames and Aislinn Smalling crushed the former division mark with their win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.80). University set the former record of 1:38.84 in 2005. Brousseau, Meagan Norling-Christensen, DeWames and Smalling bested Hart in the final event of the evening, clocking an event-best 3:33.57 to Hart's 3:33.91.

Hart's 200 medley relay (Maggie Hanson, Danny, Rachel Krager and Rachael Stoffel) set a division record in the first event of the meet with a 1:47.81 time. That mark eclipsed the former standard of 1:48.59, which Corona del Mar set in 2005.

Men's Individual Results
Robbie Pusic from Arcadia nabbed wins in each of the two shorter-distance freestyle events. Pusic won the 50 freestyle in 21.26 and the 100 freestyle in 46.72.

Andrew Saeta of Pasadena Polytechnic slid under the 49-second barrier in the 100 backstroke, clocking one of the fastest times high school swimming has seen this year in 48.94. His time bettered Michael Cavic of Tustin's division record of 49.40, which Cavic set in 2000. Saeta also settled for second place in the 200 IM (1:50.98).

Loyola won two relay events. The 200 freestyle relay quartet of Jensen Houston, Austin Cooper, Blake Cole and Forest Monroe cruised to a first-place time of 1:26.52 while the 400 freestyle relay grouping of Andrew Muller, Cooper, Scott Ogilvie and Forest Monroe triumphed with a time of 3:08.15.

Hart's 200 medley relay team of K.C. Linn, Chris Weber, Brent Stevenson and Andrew Skvarna tied a division record in the 200 medley relay with a 1:35.56 time. Hart's relay shares the record with Damien who swam that identical time back in 2001.

Diving Results
Pasadena Polytechnic took the top two spots in the women's competition as Cosima Lenz won with a 547.05 score and Felicitas Lenz settled for second with a 544.00 score. Rafaela Suarez of Claremont took third (405.80).

John Geyer of La Canada demolished the men's competition, winning with a score of 592.60. David Corless from Crescenta Valley came in second with a 495.30 score while Brandon Liu from La Canada placed third (478.65).
