USA Diving Grand Prix: Mixed Bag of Countries Win Gold -- May 12, 2008

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, May 12. A mixed bag of countries won gold medals at the USA Diving Grand Prix held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

On the first day of competition, Yutong Luo and Zhang Xinhua won the men's synchro three-meter gold medal for China with 441.39 points, while the U.S. tandem of Chris Colwill and Jevon Tarantino took silver with 416.37 points. Ukraine's team of Anton Zakharov and Dmytro Lysenko took third with 409.62 points.

The second day of finals featured the women's synchro three-meter event. Yulia Pakalina and Anastasia Pozdniakova won the gold medal for Russia with 316.62 points. China's Zhao Qinxin and Ting Li took second with 313.20 points, while Sharleen Stratton and Briony Cole earned bronze for Australia with 303.96 points.

The women's individual platform finale took place on the third day with Wang Hao winning for China with 420.30 points. Laura Wilkinson of the U.S. took silver with 360.80 points, while Tatiana Ortiz of Mexico took bronze with 338.15 points.

The same day, Kang Li and Wang Hao won synchro platform gold for China with a tally of 348.36 points. Australia's Briony Cole and Melissa Wu took silver with 325.80 points, while Laura Wilkinson and Jessica Livingston earned bronze for the U.S. with 321.84 points.

A third gold was awarded on the third day of diving with Ken Terauchi of Japan winning the men's three-meter event with 486.10 points. Troy Dumais of the U.S. garnered silver with 473.60 points, while Zhang Xinhua took bronze with 469.35 points for China.

The last day of diving had three finales as well. Yulia Pakalina of Russia won the women's three-meter in a shootout over Zi He of China, 357.90 to 357.75, while Tania Cagnotto of Italy took third with 320.50 points.

The men's platform offered an Australian 1-2 with Matthew Mitcham (534.45) and Matthew Helm (502.70) taking first and second. Germany's Sascha Klein rounded out the podium with 467.90 points.

The final event was another Aussie success as Matthew Helm and Robert Newbery teamed to win the men's synchro platform event with 443.04 points. David Boudia and Thomas Finchum took silver with 437.52 points, while China's team of Liguang Yang and Jia Hu snagged bronze with 422.88 points.
