Maria Lenk Brazil Trials: Gabriella Silva Sets South American Record -- May 9, 2008

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 9. GABRIELLA Silva clocked a South American record in the Maria Lenk Brazil Trials in the women's 50 fly at the meet held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Silva punched the pad in a time of 26.69, narrowly defeating Daynara Ferreira, who placed second in 26.96. Silva's time is among the top 10 in the world this year, while Ferreira's time is in the top 15.

Joanna Maranhao broke the Brazilian record in the women's 200 back when she clocked a time of 2:16.68, which cleared the Olympic B cut.

Lucas Salatta hit the wall with a meet record in the men's 200 back with a time of 1:58.82. The time served as an Olympic A cut, while second-place Andre Schultz took second in 1:59.90 just off the A standard.

Thiago Pereira touched out teammate Rodrigo Castro, 3:53.02 to 3:53.57, in the men's 400 free with a meet record that also beat the Olympic B cut.

National-record holder Monique Ferreira dominated the women's 400 free with a time of 4:15.52, which surpassed the Olympic B cut, while Cesar Cielo ripped off a 24.02 to win the men's 50 fly. Guilherme Dos Santos placed just behind in 24.13.

In relay action, Manuella Lyrio, Rebeca Peppi, Nabila Ocanha Perez Peixoto and Poliana Okimoto won the women's 800 free in 8:27.01, while Nicolas Cesar Oliveira, Rodrigo Castro, Edvaldo Silva and Thiago Pereira won the men's title in 7:21.63.
