Australian Grand Prix, Canberra: Pair of World Records Fall in Second Day

CANBERRA, Australia, April 25. THE second day of swimming featured a pair of world records at the Australian Grand Prix held in Canberra in short course meters.

Libby Trickett broke the world record in the 100 fly with a time of 55.74, as previously reported here. Felicity Galvez owned the previous record with a 55.89 from two weeks ago at Worlds.

Meanwhile, Leisel Jones took down her world record in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.72, as previously reported here. Jones also had the old record with a 1:03.86 from 2006.

Ashley Callus beat Leith Brodie, 48.13 to 48.63, in the men's 100 free, while Angie Bainbridge just touched out Bronte Barratt, 1:56.15 to 1:56.16, in the women's 200 free.

Travis Nederpelt earned the victory in the men's 400 IM with a time of 4:17.51, while Ashley Delaney picked up the men's 100 back title in 51.39.

In the men's 200 fly, Grant Brits won the race in 1:56.59, while Stephanie Rice took the women's 200 IM crown in 2:10.33.

Craig Stevens then won the men's 400 free in 3:44.95, while Chris Sprenger topped the men's 200 breast in 2:07.76.

Kylie Palmer also won the women's 800 free in 8:37.98, while Belinda Hocking took the women's 200 back in 2:07.71.

In the Monaco semifinals, Brits (50 free – 21.91), Brenton Rickard (50 breast – 28.06), Adam Pine (50 fly – 23.87) and Robert Hurley (50 back – 24.72) posted the top times among the men.

For the women, Cate Campbell (50 free – 24.41), Jones (50 breast – 30.10), Felicity Galvez (50 fly – 26.53) and Emily Seebohm (50 back – 27.69) topped their respective heats.
