CIJ Meet: Meet Records Plentiful on First Day

KIRSCHBERG, Luxembourg, April 25. THE first day of the CIJ Meet held in Luxembourg featured several meet records fall throughout competition.

Gero Emeling opened the meet with a record-breaking time of 2:04.18 in the men's 200 fly. The time eclipsed a 24-year-old record of 2:04.61 that had stood since 1984.

Linus Junefelt of Sweden, just 16 years old, posted the fastest time of all ages in the men's 400 free with a time of 4:02.09, destroying the meet record for 16 year olds of 4:06.96 set back in 1987.

A pair of meet records fell in the men's 200 IM with Marco Koch setting the 17-18 age division standard with a 2:06.23, while Yannick Lebherz touched in 2:06.84 to win among the 19-20 group.

Emilia Pikkarainen of Finland emerged from the 15-16 group with a meet-record time of 2:22.06, that also beat all-comers regardless of age.

The women's 400 free featured another younger swimmer winning the open title out of all heats as Laura Zimmerman touched in 4:30.90 for the top time of the day.

Heidi Karjalainen of Finland won a close contest with Sabrina Marzahn, 2:21.58 to 2:21.81, in the women's 200 fly.
