German Olympic Trials: Britta Steffen Strikes Again, 50 Free National Record Falls

BERLIN, Germany, April 23. ON the final day of swimming at the German Olympic Trials, Britta Steffen dropped her national record in the women's 50 free.

Steffen, who already lowered her 100 free record yesterday with a 53.20, smashed her national record in the 50 free with a time of 24.19. Her previous best had been a 24.53 from earlier this month. She finished just .1 seconds off Marleen Veldhuis' European record of 24.09 and .22 seconds off Libby Trickett's world record of 23.97 from last month.

Dorothea Brandt placed second in the event in 25.24, while Petra Dallmann (25.29) and Daniela Gotz (25.51) completed the top four.

Distance events ruled the bulk of the day as Jaana Ehmcke won the women's 800 free in 8:26.70 to make the Olympic standard, while Annika Lurz (8:39.61) finished shy of the cut. In the men's 1500 free, Christian Kubusch finished well off the Olympic cut of 15:02.16 with a winning time of 15:13.71.

In other events, Thomas Rupprath (52.05) and Benjamin Starke (52.23) cleared the Olympic standard in the men's 100 fly, while Janne Schafer won the non-Olympic women's 50 breast in 31.25.

In 400 medley relay action, the team of Helge Meeuw, Johannes Neumann, Thomas Rupprath and Steffen Deibler won the men's race in 3:37.29, while Franzisca Scheiner, Karoline Degenhardt, Lena Kalla and Lurz pocketed the women's title in 4:12.73.
