Team USA Women’s Water Polo vs. USC

LOS ANGELES, California, April 21. THE USA Women's Senior National Team posted their second straight win over the NCAA's elite as they knocked off third ranked University of Southern California 10-8 in a game played at the McDonald Swim Stadium on the campus of USC. The game was a return for several players on the Team USA roster including Lauren Wenger, Patty Cardenas, Moriah van Norman, Erika Figge, Brittany Hayes, and current student athlete Kami Craig who is red-shirting this season.

Similar to their battle with UCLA this game was closely contested throughout the first half as the teams ended in a tie at 3-3 after the first stanza and 5-5 at intermission. Van Norman and Figge helped build an early 3-1 lead before USC battled back to tie it. The Women of Troy than took it further building up a two goal lead at 5-3 in the second quarter before goals from Brenda Villa and Figge slowed their momentum and pushed the game to a tie at half.

USC would again take the lead in the early stages of the third quarter at 6-5 before Team USA opened up a furious rally racking up five straight goals to build up a 10-6 lead. Van Norman, Windes, Villa, Figge, and Heather Petri found the net with Villa's goal coming on a drawn five meter by van Norman and Team USA was in command.

Southern Cal would cash in a pair of late goals but it was not enough as Team USA came away with the victory at 10-8. Figge led the way with a trio of goals while Betsey Armstrong was solid in net refuting eight shots. This game also served as a return for USA Assistant Coach and Team Leader Bernice Orwig who was a standout goalie for USC winning a national championship and Cutino Award in her time on campus.
