German Olympic Trials: Two European Records Tumble During Second Night

BERLIN, Germany, April 19. THE second night of swimming at the German Olympic Trials featured a pair of European records fall.

Helge Meeuw broke the European-record tie with Liam Tancock of Great Britain in the men's 100 back with a time of 53.10. Previously, Meeuw and Tancock had shared the record with matching times of 53.46. Meeuw posted his time in 2006, while Tancock went 53.46 in 2007.

The time moved Meeuw into sole possession of third-place all time in the event. Only Aaron Peirsol (52.98) and Michael Phelps (53.01) have gone faster.

Additionally, Thomas Rupprath placed second in 54.16, under the Olympic qualifying standard.

In the women's 100 breast, Sarah Poewe cleared another European standard that featured a tie. Emma Igelstrom and Anna Khlystunova shared the record with matching times of 1:07.27. Igelstrom's from 2002, while Khlystunova's came in 2007.

Poewe, however, erased both records with a winning time of 1:07.10 to move into the top 10 all time.

Sonja Schober placed second in 1:08.17 to also make the Olympic standard.

Paul Biedermann wasted little time dropping his Gross-busting national record in the men's 200 free. Last month, Biedermann beat Michael Gross' long standing national record with a time of 1:46.59. Today, he dropped it even further with a time of 1:46.37 to move into sole possession of seventh all time behind Klete Keller (1:46.13) and ahead of Simon Burnett (1:46.59).

Steffen Deibler touched second in the event in 1:47.71 as he cleared the Olympic standard.

In other action, Christin Zenner won the women's 100 back in 1:01.24, just off the Olympic standard, while Annika Lurz posted a 4:08.48 in the women's 400 free, also barely missing the cut. Johannes Dietrich won the non-Olympic men's 50 fly in 23.55.

Results of the men's 400 freestyle relay were unavailable at press time.
