Injury, Illness Postpone Charlotte Davis’s Training

By Emily Sampl

BOULDER, Colorado, April 18. BACK in 1982, Charlotte Davis was casually swimming laps at the local pool when coach Robin O'Leary invited her to join the Masters team in the area. Lured by the thought of swimming with others and being given workouts and stroke tips by a real coach, Davis joined the team. Looking back, it's one of the best decisions she's ever made.

"I thank my lucky stars that I was fortunate to be at the pool that day back in 1982 when the Masters Coach, Robin O'Leary, asked me to join her team," she said.

Davis' current career as a professional synchronized swimming coach has given her the freedom to train when it's convenient, since her office is basically at the pool. She swims six times a week for 1-1½ hours, plus additional resistance training three days a week. Unfortunately, Charlotte's training for the 2008 USMS Short Course Nationals in May was suddenly interrupted when she broke her ankle walking her two dogs just more than a month ago. Around the same time, her husband was admitted to the hospital with a serious illness. Needless to say, her training has been temporarily put on hold.

"My training came to a halt six weeks ago and now I am just doing some pulling and attempting to kick with one leg. I was still planning on going to try to compete at Nationals just for fun, when life threw me another curve," she said. "I may try for the Long Course Nationals this summer depending upon the progress of my husband and how much assistance he will require upon returning home. My goals for that meet will be simple – be able to go!"

Regardless of how much training she's able to get in, Davis knows that the friendships she's formed with other swimmers and the health benefits of swimming are the most important things.

"My teammates have become great friends and I enjoy seeing them everyday, sharing in their lives and having fun with them at our social events outside of the pool," she said. "And I have more energy throughout the day, better overall flexibility and mobility, and my overall mental and physical health is better when I swim."

Hopefully it's only a matter of time until we see Charlotte back in action.
