MANCHESTER, England, April 13. RUSSIA's Yuri Prilukov became the first three-time defending champion in the men's 1500 free at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

Prilukov closed out the race in commanding fashion with a time of 14:22.98 to finish a bit off his European record of 14:16.13. He did, however, dip under his meet record of 14:23.92 set in 2006.

Prilukov previously won the event in 2004 and 2006. He joins Grant Hackett as the only other three-time winner as Hackett won in 1997, 1999 and 2002. Hackett, however, has his reign split with a win from Germany's Jorg Hoffmann in 2000.

"It was pretty easy," Prilukov told meet organizers. "I didn't work hard but I am not satisfied with my time, I can go much faster time but something went wrong today. I don't know what but I feel a little bit uncomfortable. I really want to swim against Grant Hackett face-to-face. It's not difficult to make [the title record] without Grant (in the race)."

Great Britain's David Davies placed second in 14:36.30, off his national record of 14:32.56 set in 2004, while Poland's Mateusz Sawryowicz rounded out the top three in 14:43.37.
