MANCHESTER, England, April 12. ADAM Pine from Australia nabbed the gold in the 50 butterfly final at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

Pine blasted a 22.78 time, touching out Ukrane's Sergii Breus by .08. Breus turned in a silver-medal standard of 22.86.

Pine told meet organizers that his training helped him beat out his competition at the turn.

"They are bigger and stronger than me, but I used a long stroke under water at the turn," Pine said. "Felicity [Galvez] and I trained together and we did a lot of work on dolphin kick and breath control. We did a lot of 25m work under water, working on the speed and breath control."

Evgeny Korotyshkin from Russia rounded out the three medal winners with a 22.94 performance.

Albert Subirats from Venezuela stopped the clock fourth with a time of 22.96. Mark Foster of Great Britain bagged a fifth-place finish with a time of 23.04.

Johannes Dietrich from Germany (23.05), Mario Todorovic from Croatia (23.23) and Christopher Wright from Australia (23.28) rounded out the rest of the field.
