MANCHESTER, England, April 12. JESSICA Hardy of the United States notched a gold-medal performance and lowered her own meet record at the FINA World Short Course Championships final for the 100 breaststroke.

Hardy turned in a 1:04.22 time, which lowered her former meet record of 1:04.63, which she set last night in the semifinal heats. In addition, Hardy took down Tara Kirk's American record of 1:04.30, which Kirk set last month.

Hardy told meet organizers that while she did not meet her goal of setting the world record, she was pleased with her swims.

"I was hoping to set a world record, but it was still a great time so I am very happy with that," Hardy said. "I'm really happy. I'm not fully tapered for this meet so to get these times is really exciting."

Jade Edmistone of Australia touched second in 1:04.93. Suzaan Van Biljon from South Africa stopped the clock third with a time of 1:05.38.

Sarah Katsoulis of Australia came in fourth, clocking a 1:05.46. Yuliya Efimova representing Russia finished fifth in 1:05.71.

Mima Jukic of Austria (1:06.09), Katie Haywood of Great Britain (1:06.35) and Ye Sun from China (1:06.99) rounded out the field of eight.
